Concrete cutting blades

#1 Post by longbow steve » Thu Apr 18, 2013 5:27 pm

Hey knife makers, if I cut out with a grinder and remove stock with a linisher do I need to temper at the end or would the knife be able to be sharpened to hold a good edge? Also is the metal in these blades good for the purpose of knife making. Thanks Steve

Its all relative to the type of steel as well as the induced heat during stock removal. If you could remove the material slowly without raising the temp to the stage where the metal is becoming blued then you may be able to get away with out re heating and tempering.

Thanks Bob, that is what I had hoped.

Yes they do but I am assuming the rest of the blade is of good quality steel. Steve

I use concrete blades a lot. Look for the big ones, at least 18 inches across. You can cut the knives out with a 4 inch grinder and a thin cut off blade. The steel is soft but good quality and you can just heat treat the blades when you finish using any recipe you like that suits 1095, L6 or any similar simple steel.
The smaller blades that are around 12 inches across are mostly rubbish and the quality of the steel is pretty variable.

Steve i have made quite a few from circular and drop saw blades. As long as you take your time cutting and grinding all is good. I have not had to reharden them. They still hold a good edge.
