couple old knives.

#1 Post by bigbob » Tue Nov 22, 2011 2:06 pm

Some may have seen me commenting occasionly on knives so I thought I would post these shots of a couple I made more that 20 years ago. They have been cleaned up many times due to surface rust from acid on the fingers not being cleaned properly. They were both made from a high carbon tool steel called O1, which is brilliant to work with as it comes annealed and responds greatly to heat treatment. My background was as a mine heavy maintenance boily, dealing in all sorts of alloys and steels. Both are showing their age and the grind lines have been polished out to a degree. The big bowie originally had all engraving running along the upper section but has all but gone due to rust removal. The smaller knife is a drop point skinner. They were part of only 4 knives I made, the other 2 disappeared years ago. I have gone back to using my old point and shoot camera which works as long as I hold the battery compartment closed with fingers.

Damn Otis I was hoping no one would ask me that question. It was 25 years ago and i am flat out guessing my name these days.  Yeah Rod they both have a bit of weight about them, but I dont really use them these days, sometimes take the big bowie as a pig sticker but it hasnt had that duty for a long time. And Jeff, like their owner these knives are just "mature"

I did get the bit about 'old timers' too Jeff, as long as you were referring to the Schrade[?] variety!
