Railway Spike Knife
On my recent holiday in western Qld, my father-in-law and I stumbled across a pile of old railway spikes. A few found their way into the camper trailer for the trip home and now I'm keen to have a go at trying to make a couple of knives... Have any of you attempted this - and can pass on some advice and instructions?

Lately, if life were treating me any better, I'd be suspicious of it's motives!

Re: Railway Spike Knife
You can make these too...
I seem to have lost some of the others on the other computer but you get the idea.
Spikes are fun to forge with as they are free but they are prob more of a novelity type thing for gifts and letter openers as the steel will harden and take a res edge but there are many other better quality steels you can also get for free and that are a known steel which helps when it comes to the heat treating.Engine oil is fine for quenching just heat the finished blade until a magnet wont stick to it and lower it in the oil point first straight down.It WILL catch fire and smoke heaps so be carefull. Then clean it up and put it in the wifes oven for about 45 mins or until it is a straw colour and take it out and let it air cool.Presto....
