I think a fine bit of Knapping

#1 Post by hardgainer » Wed Jun 08, 2011 10:57 am

Got onto a great bit of work from Ron Saunders. The blade is striped Burns green obsidian sinew wrapped hafted to a Elk antler handle. Bear head carving is stained to highlite detail and under signed by Robert Roberts. Knife is 8 1/8" in length. The endcap is a dogwood burl. I understand Ron knapps his blades with upward pressure giving great uniformity. Great to have these sort of skills.

A beautiful piece of work.

A truly marvelous primitive knife Hardgainer. To think the skill required to produce blades like that was once not unusual. Thank goodness for those that preserve the skills of ages past.

While I appreciate the skill in Knapping such a marvelous blade there is equal skill in the Scrimshaw / Carving of the Bears Head. It is something that has interested me for a very long time. I have gone so far as to haft a few Antler handle's to blade's and carve the odd Animal track into bone but have not began to experiment with Scrimshaw yet - Just lovely, I'll keep coming back to look at it.

That is just brilliant and beautiful! Straight to the pool room, though. Display only, I wouldn't have the nerve to use it! :?

Again appreciate the comment guys. Great reinforcement when you look at a hell of a lot of knapped blades and one sure stands out. Your right Jacko ive seen some great scrimshaw that was as good as a portrait and you wondered how the heck did they do it and get it to look so great. Good luck in your future works.

Thanks Tony.....You know me well but the brain is still a bit fried after St Petersburg and the all day nights. Still have to talk about your skills on a Fred Bear replica knife sheath knife and steel combo. ( plus bow box bag we talked about earlier)
