I found my first ever knife. Renovation ideas?

I found my first ever knife. Renovation ideas?

Well once upon a time there was a lad who was finally let out of home on his first ever school camp. Now that was a long time ago, I cant recall if it was Trafalgar or Traralgon. We got off the train and were allowed 20 min around town before the bus arrived to take us to the camp. I found a shop which had some knives and being a city boy, on his first campout and who had never been allowed such things at home. With all the measly pocket money I had for the whole camp I spent it on this knife.

Haven seen it for years, found it whilst tidying up the garage due to recent flood activity.
It had some old leather around it handle which I have taken off here. I have since removed the cracked scales.Front bolster, which I have sprung off, is brass, rear looks like cast aluminium. Im loath to replace such things even tho they are no doubt cheap and poorly made but thats the origin of the knife and to change such would lessen its history? ;)

So Im going to fix new scales. I have some left over black sasafrass ?

Im not sure to clean bright the blade or just re edge it and leave the black'nd look.

Sheath is long gone too so Ill need to make up a new

Finding your first knife, can't beat personnel history like that.

Perhaps a soak in Inox or similar and gently rub the rust back with fine steel wool which should maintain most of the patenna. I like old carbon steel blades, they have soul.

Having seen the photos of your first knife , I would be very interested in hearing and seeing how the story pans out . If you have renovated the knife can we see the finished product .

You may be interested in an article located at
http://www.smex.net.au/Reference/RustRemoval02.htm . I haven't actually used the process but have seen knives and badly corroded firearms restored this way. As pointed out in the article it will NOT remove any sound steel, only the actual rust scale (which has already changed from steel to iron oxide anyway) It seems to be the preferred method used by several organisations interested in restoration of antique tools, engines and firearms etc. I haven't actually carried out the process myself but have seen several items which have been cleaned effectively this way.

(A google search for electolytic rust removal brought up about 40 000 hits so its been well tested.)

If the aluminium bolster isn't readily removeable, it might be appropriate to suspend the knife so the bolster isn't submerged.

Whichever way you choose to go, it will be interesting to see the results.
