A play with the forge
I have always wanted to have a go at making Damascus.
A while ago I got some 12mm wire rope so I thought I'd have a bash.
I made a forge with besser blocks and made a burner and belted out this little blade. Now to do the grind and heat treat.
The blade is only 1.5" long and if it breaks all good it's a learning curve.

That's it Woodie get in there and have a go.
Yes, as said every new step is a learning curve.
Well done.
Will be watching out the pattern outcome as it appears in the grind.

Re: A play with the forge
Looks like a good start Woodie, should make a nice little caping knife. What will you etch it with to bring out the pattern?
Re: A play with the forge
I made some ferric chloride, hydrochloric acid fine steel wool and hydrogen peroxide.
I glued it into a small file handle this afternoon so photos tomorrow.

Very nice result woodie.
Re: A play with the forge
I had a bit more fun with the forge turning a roller bearing into a blade.
The roller was 35mm long by 15mm dia one end 17mm dia the other.
the total length of the blade is 110mm with a thickness of 5mm.
I now have to dress the blade and finish it off.

Re: A play with the forge
Hi all, here is the finished roller knife, well just some hand finishing to do.
I even had a go at making micarta between the horn and brass. Still a bit rough but it's all a learning curve.

Very Cool, Blacksmithing really intrigues me, wish I did not live in a Unit Complex and had reasonable neighbor's. When you think about it if you have some proficiency at Blacksmithing you can make your own Tools to make your own Knives/Broadheads, cooking utencils etc to process your own Game Meat etc etc. Loving your work Woodie !

Re: A play with the forge
Thanks, I am not that good at it I am like most of us trad lovers have to have a go and see where it takes us.
It is just fun to change scrap into something new. And try and keep the old ways alive.
