Folks,

One of the main aims of Ozbow is for the promotion of Traditional Bowhunting and Archery.

Having this in mind, it has come to the notice of Admin that some member's avatars are showing archery equipment other than traditional equipment.

If you wish to use photographs in your avatars depicting archery equipment or game taken whilst hunting, please ensure that the equipment used is Traditional archery equipment only. Simply put, no compounds, crossbows, guns, etc allowed.

Thanks for your cooperation with this.

Geez mate thats a bit Nazi like isnt it ? Some of us dont have a Trad bow yet and are just getting into it . A bit Anal comes to mind as well ! Attitudes like this is what will drive some away. I agree with the gun bit , but archery is archery , and segragating archers is not the best way to attract newbies to here . It's bad in general , a bit of "us and them " attitude here methinks! So compound shooters are not welcome here ?
For gods sake its an Avatar ! Would you like me to remove my slob/drunken avatar as well ?

I think it should be kept all traditional as this is what ozbow is. I changed my avitar when someone mentioned it to me, and it didn't fit well here I can now see that.
just my opinion

In my opinion, it's not such a big deal. I can understand Jeff's reasoning for the request. There are no hidden agendas. We are a traditional archery site therefore we should promote traditional archery at every opportunity.

I sure Jeff isn't saying we all need to find a photo that is traditional archery orientated for an avatar. He's simply asking members, if they choose to use a hunting avatar it should be one that promotes traditional archery.

We already abide by avatar restrictions on this site. I'm sure most members prefer a site free of smutty avatars. This is just an extension of the same principal. Avatars appear repeatedly thoughout the various forums and can have a huge impact of the overall "atmosphere" of any site. If members don't like certain forums, such as the religious one, its easy to avoid. Just don't go there.

Coach,

I'm sorry you feel that way but IMO you are over reacting. This is a Trad site as opposed to a general bowhunting/archery site. The site is to promote Trad archery and therefore is mainly focused on catering to the Trad Bowhunter/Archer and those interested in Trad Bowhunting or Archery.

I guess just having this site (a Traditional site) could be said to be segregating Bowhunters/Archers but I don't see it like that, nor do I think the majority do. This site is simply catering to a specific interest group. A bit like a Ford site and a Holden site, both are car sites but they each cater for the specific interests of their membership.
It's bad in general , a bit of "us and them " attitude here methinks! So compound shooters are not welcome here ?
I disagree with you regarding this. I have said it before and I will say it again - surely it is obvious to any observer that the modern Bowhunter/Archer and the Trad Bowhunter/Archer can and do have different interests. This isn't being divisive it is just stating a simple fact. If it wasn't so then there wouldn't be the need for a site like Ozbow.

Compound shooters are most welcome here on Ozbow Coach as I feel certain you know!
For gods sake its an Avatar ! Would you like me to remove my slob/drunken avatar as well ?
As Mick Smith has already said we do have a standard regarding avatars in general. If your avatar had been considered unacceptable you would have been asked to remove it.

I hope this helps explain things a little better.

Coach not really thinking about it to much I had a photo of my red deer in my avitar show a compound, someone nicely pointed it out to me so I removed it.

  I'm good at doing things wrong twice

Its a better look to the site in general if avitars hold a image of interest, this site interest in trad.

agree, but also think that the avator should represent the person too. If theirs a pic with a compound shooter asking about trad issues, then you know you might be helpin someone out who doesn't know know much about trad. You'll turn em do the dark side (trad) anyway so later on they'll have a pic with a recurve or longbow.

I'm a bit lost about the avatar rule. Traditional equipement only means what? Just no compounds and x-bows? Or only longbows and recurves?
What about the new high tech longbows and recurves?

Is this one OK?

Miguel,

You photo is fine. We simply wish to promote traditional equipment. Therefore if you wish to have an avatar that includes archery equipment we ask that it be traditional archery orientated - longbows, recurves, selfbows etc.

I think it would be good if people read the 'Where We Stand' section on our home page as it explains quite clearly what Ozbow is about.

If you have any further questions please ask.

No worries. I did read that page you are talking about. I just get confused about what "traditional" or "primitive" or what have you. I shoot recurves which seem traditional to me. But then I see some with, stabilizers, sights, rangefinders, clickers, counterweights, lasers, pistol grip releases, etc. That seems at least as non-traditional as a compound. To me anyway, but then I met this old guy with a wooden compound, no extras, just like a recurve with wheels, and it looked pretty old-school to me.

No your legs are way to far apart ,, bad form mate ! Close them to about shoulder width

That is shoulder width. I think in profile I'm kinda shaped like spongebob, so it looks like my legs are way too far apart, when they are really only a couple of inches too far apart.

It's much easier if everyone follows the rules. Traditional only is way to go.

Hello all
With these avitars I can't get a good enough res pic to download. I thought it would be easier to copy somebody else's avatar into photoshop and placed my pic over the top then flattened it but this still wont let me download at that res either.
Eg: I copied yours Jeff which was 67.2k and placed my desired photo over it and it still wouldn't let me. My avitar is 10.7k.

As for Trad I would say one string no sights, stabilizers or release aids but it's OK to have your tongue in the corner of your mouth.

Unless you have a physical need in which you require some type of aid then I think it's OK. ie: missing one arm etc.

Comp*#nd Bows are toooooo easy. Unless you shoot them with no sights or release aid.
I suggest from now on we never mention them again.
Or we refer to them as the forbidden COMP*#ND BOW.

Keep smiling every one. Archery is suppose to be fun.
Unless you miss every thing like me.
Tex

You know the gulf between compound bow users and trad is really starting to close, especially in AA.
A lot of people are now used to us being around in numbers, a lot more spectators and archers gravitate down to our end of the park. A number are getting longbows for their fun bows and even shootinh them at clout events and going to trad events. A few have decided to start shooting longbow next year for competitions. The number of Aussie AA shooters ranked at world field using longbows with timber arrows and barebow recurves has increased drammatically. All these things have reduced the gap in understanding and acceptance.

as i see it, like tradgang, ozbow is a 101% trad bowhunting website and there is no want or need to promote other forms of weaponry. the focus should be kept to stick bows, so that the conversation doesn't veer off to matters which don't pertain to the goals of the website. there are oodles of other non-stick bow weaponry sites to visit and chat. i commend ozbow for keeping the good ship on a proper course. cheers to you all!

I mean absolutely no disrespect to anyone but I felt compelled to say something on this even if it did happen in 2005 but guys,
We are getting in the realms of politically correct here! This is an extremely evil and sick state of mind! Who cares what the Avatar is! lets leave politically correct to those still in search of a life! I would ask you What TRUE traditional archer give a rats about whether a comittee approved of how he prepared his meat, shoots his bow or what he chooses for his Bloody Avatar? Society has enough rules what possible reason could you have to look for more!

An Avatar is just an Avatar, I thought content of the site was more important than an Avatar? Otherwise we'll all sound like a load of civil servants (and I am one) getting their knickers in a twist about sizes, colours and shapes of logos, branding etc (and I actually had this very debate at work today). Similar to what someone mentioned back in the vintage of 2005, if you're getting into trad but haven't got a bow then you'll put them off as a bunch of snoots and I know you're not but thats the way it would appear. I mean if you had taken a goat with a wheel bow and wanted to shout it from the roof tops then why not have an Avatar of that.
