Ozbow is moving servers

#1 Post by Scrub Bull » Fri Jun 27, 2014 5:27 pm

Hi All
Ozbow will be moving to new servers in the coming days.
All going well we will be off the air for a few hours.
If it goes to lumpy custard it may be a few days.
I am giving Jeff a hand with this, do any of us know what we are doing NOPE.
What could go wrong?

See you all out the other side, maybe!

The degree of satisfaction gained from the accomplishment of a goal is directly proportional to the hardships and challenges overcome in order to achieve it.

Hi All
Here is an update on the move to the new servers.
Yesterday we installed the software to run this site on the new servers. That has all gone well.
Last night we did at test move of all the data 1.9Gb yes that took most of the night. It all looks good for the most part.
The only problem we can see at the moment is some pictures are not showing up or only partly showing, We should have to worked out this morning.

If we get the picture problem sorted we hope to do the change over tonight. What does this mean to everyone out there?
The first thing that will happen is we will need to stop everyone posting on Ozbow so we can move the final lot of data.
Then we do a final backup of data and move it to the new servers, this could take all night if it goes well.
When the data has moved and the new site is up and running we ask the nice people at Spiderweb.com.au to change the DNS servers to point to the new site.
The changing the names on the DNS server and it spreading around the world will take 24 - 48 hours.

In short when this all starts to happen you wont be able to post on Ozbow but you should be able to still read it.
Hopefully with in 48 hours you will start to see the new site and everything will be as it was.
All you will need to do is when ever you go to Ozbow is refresh your web browser for the next week so it can update any changes we make.

Thanks to spiderweb.com.au and their staff who have given Jeff a good deal on hosting ozbow and have been a big help getting things set up at their end.

Last thing stop worrying Jeff it will all work I think

That all sounded great except for the "I think" bit!

Mark and his son have been doing an amazing job with organising the site transfer etc.

As Mark said, hopefully the move to the new servers will happen tonight and Ozbow will have its new home.

Well folks I think a good percentage of you will be on the new server by now. It is a great feeling having it changed over as it was something that I have wanted to do for a very long time.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mark from Trad Bits (Scrub Bull) and his son Owen for all their hard work over this past week. Without their help it wouldn't have happened. They have done an exceptional job with not only changing the site over to our new hosts but have also done a lot of cleaning up of the front page and adding new features. If you haven't already, check out the front page and see the changes. There are a number of new links to Trad suppliers and Bowyers etc. Also the random photos are now a slide show as they once were. Fellas thanks so very much for all your help.

Thanks also to the staff at Spiderweb for their excellent assistance in getting the site changed over. A very big thank you to Ian, the owner of Spiderweb, for for giving us such an exceptional hosting deal.

Thanks must also go to those who have helped us keep Ozbow going on the tech side over the years or we wouldn't have gotten to this point. Thanks GrahameA, Grahame's son Kris, Guy Curtis (Gundy) and Rob Mc Paul Brown (rmpb); your help has been really appreciated fellas.

With Ozbow now safely in its new home I hope you all enjoy visiting the forums for a long time to come.

Jeff

Congrats to all concerned. It's a big commitment to running a site like this so it's nice to see the users all pulling together in their own way to make it successful.
Cheers
