Re: Dowel maker
If you don't get the holes right you can end up with a funny looking dowel - might best be described as a 'character' arrow. I would recommend a few practice runs first. Mind you, once I had everything lined up and stuff I came out with some very nice dowels. I initially made the thing to run up som...

Re: Dowel maker
I made a doodad for dowels using this design - pretty good but you have to be careful to get the holes done right.

An ideal hunting buddy
Now I don't want this getting out of hand but while footling around with some osage today (and made Mrs Looseplucker a nice pair of knitting needles from the yaller stuff) I had the following thought and here is how I thunk it that no matter how long and how hard you'd been bashing it you can't get ...

Re: Snobery in hunting
Trad, compound. Whatever. I own and shoot bows made from all sorts. Next trip I am likely to use a wheelie one day and a sinew backed osage the next. As Billb once said - "it's all archery".

Re: After a bit of a break
As I said in private Jeff, William helped me size that bow. He was not too fussed when it was full length, but when I'd shortened it and tillered it out and he tried it with an arra (that he made) I teared up when he said "Dad, can I have this bow....?"

Re: Best type of finish for a bow ?
I once saw some bush furniture with a beaut finish. Water beaded on it and no soaking stains. I asked the builder what he used: "Kiwi shoe polish and dubbin".

Re: After a bit of a break
Howdy - and thanks for the kind comments  Actually the tips were in alignment in a tillering point that we didn't get a photo of. There is some residual stiffness in the RH limb as a function of the reflex holding there about 1/2 an inch more - which I have no idea why is happening. However th...

Re: After a bit of a break
A bow is a piece of wood perfectly tillered...... I could not have got it to that state without Yeoman's eye. He saw things I did not see. And I mean that. I will admit I have some ideas on bowyery that are different but it is just grand that we have this community where we can appraise each other's...

Re: After a bit of a break
Mate - I am surprised at what it is shooting after being tillered - 37/38# @ 24" with William having about a 26" draw....not bad for a backed self bow at 61". Mind you osage is pretty tough - look at the really short sinew backed bows.

Re: After a bit of a break
Pix coming soon. The Osage bow is now finished. It was originally 66"ntn and I was going for 45# draw. Anyhow while faffing with the tips and a disc sander it got suddenly shortened at one end by 2". Sooooo after the traditional swearing I fixed the other end. As it was time to visit with ...

Re: Help - Thinking of making a red oak long bow
With a view to adding some value, there is this tutorial on Sam Harper's website about making a red oak board bow - and some interesting ideas on backing. http://poorfolkbows.com/oak.htm You could also back the bow with calico. I've done that with a bunch of bows - all board ones - with between 2-4 ...

Re: Making string wax
I use beeswax that I get from a local beekeeper. Seems to work fine on the linen strings. For sealing my wood arrows tho'' I get Mrs Looseplucker to save the fat she drains off the mince when making up a big bolognese. I then heat that and strain it through some muslin and then mix it 50-50 with bee...

@Rob. you used to be able to download PDFs of the archery ones - I did - so I have the one that Daryl has posted on and I have another about making take down hunting bows - even how to make your own sleeve and socket combo. Brilliant stuff.

Re: After a bit of a break
Doing tip overlays on the osage bow - bit of a bugger in that some of the reflex has pulled out of a limb in floor tillering  The takedown needs the belly and back bamboo putting on and I will then fit the sleeve and sockets. Bit weekend of sport coming up but I might get something done on Satu...

Before I select the hamburger option I think the poll is utterly r@#ted. You are allowed one option only. I will have some more pics of both my bows on my "After a Break" thread - I did split the thread but they've been spliced for continuity.

And Tony Abbott said about both the ant and the grasshopper, "$hit happens" and then only just restrains himself from punching a reporter who asks about it, and then allows Gina Rhinehart to dig out the ant's nest and flog it off to the Chinese and pay bugger all tax on it and puts in an i...

Re: Shoot A Bow For Fun.
Way cool Daryl - I have the Popular Mechanics one on making a takedown hunting bow as well as that one (and the plans for making a semi-automatic crossbow). I often refer to both of the schematics when planning a bow. Great call.

Well John, I am shocked. I thought you were going to show us how you made a new bow for your double bass. Re: After a bit of a break
Cheers colleagues The Leader of the Opposition, Mrs Looseplucker is away until Sunday so I can sneak in some workshop time. What I intend to do is work on the take-down a bit more and finish the riser and the facetting of the osage bow. I'll then leave it a week before subjecting it to tillering - I...
