Re: Another Knife born

Nice pick up on the Anvil woodie. The first knife is looking good. A word of caution for using your gas forge. I don't know if this is a issue for your forge but it was for mine and it won't take long to check. I see your jet arrangement is different to mine and may prevent the heat flowing backward...

The "money shot" looks good Darren. There appears to be plenty of room for a much longer draw length in the photo. A nice looking longbow.

Re: Snake skin sheds

Thanks Gentlemen,

Rob, that is a handy bit of research. It seems that the shed skins are considered part of the animal, I should ask him nicely not to leave them draped beside my access door so I not tempted to use them. Last time, at first light I thought he had me

Snake skin sheds

I wonder if it would be OK (i.e. legal) to use snake skin sheds to back bows, even if it was just for the looks rather than mechanical support. I cant see why not? This young scrub python has been leaving a shed skin in my shed  every 5-6 weeks. it is about 2.4 m overall length. Cheers... Rod Z...

Re: First trophy with the longbow - just braggin' - updated

Just over two years since Dad passed away, I put my latest bow in the local Ag show where we live now in Ingham. I did it mainly as a personal remembrance for Dad as he loved putting woodwork in the shows (see OP). Well I was surprised to find it won the section and champion exhibit for woodwork. Ho...

Re: Wayno's Justastik arrowcraft UPDATED June 2017

They look real good Wayno, thanks for sharing the process. I was planning a new set of arrows and was going to use white nocks and caps, 2 white and a red bright barred cock feather. Seems I was on the right track but you beat me to it. Might just go for 3 white feathers again. It makes them easier ...

Thank you for your kind words gentlemen. I do have to make a lighter set of limbs, Robyn could only get these ones back to about 18-20 inches of draw length.

Ladies take-down semi-recurve

Made a bow for my wife, and some arrows, and a knife. ooo that rhymes. 32#@28" 64 NTN. Robyn will only draw it to around 26-27 inches. Haven't worked that out yet as this is her first bow. I may have to make a lighter set of limbs for her to get started on yet. Arrows are European pin...

A great looking self bow Bob. It would be the pinnacle of achievement to make such a bow and an arrow with a stone point to harvest some game. It seems you have most of that goal achieved already.

Re: A Fileld Knife

I think the weld will be much softer than the file due to low carbon content. It will take an edge OK but probably won't hold it for long in service. Is that weld long the cutting edge towards the tip? It seems to be a much lighter colour as well!

Re: Jenny Craig for bows

It should be possible Clint. When I made my first take down recurve it came in at 75#@28", way too much for me. After a good bit of reworking the thickness of the glass on the limbs it finished at 63#@28" which is comfortable for hunting. I purposely had 0.050 glass on the back and belly i...

Ian, I have been using one of these for a couple of years now. Without it I can't bear the pain in my left elbow (right handed shooter) after more the half a dozen shots. With it I can shoot a full target round without too much pain at all. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/FUTURO-2-PACK-LARGE-ELBOW-SUPPOR...

Full tang drop point skinner

I recently made this skinner for a friend. It is made from 1084 steel with buff horn scales. The overall length is 8 3/4" with the blade just over 4" with full flat grind. I will be trying to put a metal guard or bolsters on my next attempt. The sheath is 8oz tooling leather hand stitched....

I have made a brother to the above blade. It is a gift for the son of the previous blade's owner. The Sgian Dubh has significance to these blokes due to their Scottish ancestry.
