Hi Kev, Attached are photos of some tools and gadgets that I use when making selfbows. I have found that the spokeshave has been the most versatile tool when making selfbows. It is excellent when making ‘D’ section longbows as is the rubber backed Gyprock sanding tool. Using the outrigg...

Grahame, Concrete walls will destroy most arrows but the arrow shown in the photo was destined to a short life. The short length of the break would indicate that the particular piece of timber used was not suitable as arrow making material because of the grain orientation. Shafts such as the one sho...

Hi Grahame,

The rule regarding arrows reads 'and in uniform length' not 'uniform along its length'.
My interpretation is that it refers to the actual length and not the shape of the arrow.
So much for simple rules.

Hi Grahame and Tom, After re-reading the line “The arrow shall be of the same material and in uniform length and weight.” I take it to mean that you can use arrows made out of any one material, i.e. wood, footed or plain, aluminium or carbon but not a mixture of these when shooting a com...

Hi Tom, Thank you for digging up the ABA ruling on longbow division. We are faced with the dilemma of bow designations from three different bodies whose concerns appear to be in the limb configuration of the modern longbow. At this stage I will leave out arrow configuration of the equation as I beli...

Hi Tom, I do not know exactly how ABA formulated their rules but it would be a fair guess to say that they borrowed certain rules from International Organizations. With the current longbow division I think it was loosely based on the American flat laid laminated bows that became popular in the early...

Graeme,
Thank you for your answer.
This material adds another dimension to handle design. The density factor is certainly a plus. The process to produce this material appears to be similar to that of Dymondwood.

As a foot note to my previous posting.

If I attend certain shoots with my Red Ash selfbow I could be placed in the recurve division because of the natural curve in the tips.

Sounds a little rediculous don't you think?

One other point to factor in is the actual draw weight of the bow not the marked draw weight of the bow. Black Widow work on a +/- of 2#. The variance can be reduced depending on how much extra money you are prepared to pay. This may not sound much but bows at the opposite end of the scale would pro...
