Good news and bad news and why I love Canberra.

"Good news and bad news" said the orthopaedic surgeon I saw today about my knee. Good news - I don't need surgery. Bad news - he doesnt know what is causing the problem. I have the biggest cyst he's ever seen on my ACL. That is not causing the symptoms and he wont operate because there is ...

Re: Drying timber with a boost!

I wouldnt call myself a bowyer or a timber expert but I reckon you'd end up with firewood too - this is based on what I have seen in musical instruments where the timbers are kiln dried rather than naturally. I had a banjo with a kiln dried ebony fingerboard - it was made in South Australia - I live...

Re: we are famous and trendy !

Regards the need for a national response from all sections of archery, we now have a liaison between three of the bodies in ABA 3DAAA and AA called the Archery aAliance, supposedly formed exactly for times such as this. I know they have done a power of good in meetings with the relevant government ...

Dead right there. It is why I like doing the boo back and belly bows and will one day do one with a single core. Not laminated. With the right timber and proper dimensions I reckon a very good bow can be done.

I'm inspired to do a selfie (not like Stephanie Rice). Just need to finish that horsebow I started and I'm into it. Bamboo backed Osage I reckon. Or hickory backed.

Gday Chasps Got an email over to John McDonald and all set! I did check 3 Rivers and the other places but when we're talking a boy who can be expensive on equipment a lot of their prices were a a bit of a hit on the back pocket. Going to try some of Graham Amy's ideas too - However - a big THANKS to...

Re: FINALLY MET LOOSEPLUCKER

Struth :surprised:  Who would have thought it would have gone that far!!! Anyhow, Dennis traded me some nice lams of hickory from rudderbows and I have secretly recorded him promising to make me a bow out of the yaller stuff I shot his way  Jeff - did post a story about the wilds of ...

Re: Bamboo, Brigalow & Black Bean.

A really nice piece of kit. What I always found a challenge when I got more breakers than shooters (and I've gone rusty on selfies because my laminated ones worked pretty good) was getting the width and thickness taper right. Clearly your dimensions are working because you get a good tiller pretty m...

Re: WTB Bodkin points

Thanks Chaps

The idea of grinding field points square is interesting. I think William would like them as authentic as possible. I did have some on arrows that Tom McDonald left at my place, but a couple have going missing and I would like to make William a matching set.

I emailed John too.

Well actually Digger, having made a lot of kindling in my quest to make bows I have learned the value of measure twice cut (or drill) once! 3 sets of curtains up in quick time - and lo! there were studs behind the plasterboard!! There was great rejoicing.

Well it was a fun week which began and ended with catching up with Ozbow mates. First up was Dennis whom I have pestered over the years and thanks to him and others like Jeff and Greybeard and Yeoman I managed to make a shooter or two. That haven't broken yet either. Anyhow Dennis and I met up at Be...

Matt I understand how you feel - but the two situations are entirely different - well -not entirely. See, there is nothing illegal about seeking asylum. Kidnapping is illegal though. But in both cases we have our own law formed on the basis of our being signatories to the UN Convention on Refugees e...

Somebody was worried about looking like a black shape or something. Well those dudes are black. Just sayin' THis is true indeed. I think it all comes down to hedging your bets or one percentiles and doing what is reasonable to minimise the chance of spooking your prey. Smell being the obvious and m...

Anyhow - probably not the venue for the debate. Yeah, fair point, John. It was only a half-hearted protest anyway, as far as the Cap/Soc debate goes I think the horse has well and truly bolted, mate.  No worries Digger - thanks for the tip on huntsman altho those are the recurve model...
