Re: Big Brother's first trad bow

Jeese Rod your set up looks way more pro than mine   . What's the electrical gizzmo you've got pluged in above the riser, a temp gage or something? Very nice work, on both the form and the bow 8) . Just saw your other thread and I reckon you're well qualified to hand out a bit of advice, ...

Re: Flatline opus 1&2

Fiddled around a bit more this afternoon. One of the most difficult lamination fittings I have ever done. I wouldn't normally do it this way, usually I would build it up in layers, but I made the mistake of cutting out the whole leaf shape instead of just one side at a time which made clamping it in...

Re: Flatline opus 1&2

Time for another episode in the continuing saga of the Flatline opus bows. After repeating the same, though more complex process for the second set off limb blanks I ran them through the lam grinder this morning and they came up OK. I couldn't get the full width of the limb profile out of two of the...

I have used a lot of forrest red (gum) in decks it is rather hard it rates a 12 janka hardness, and dense 1050 kg/m3, modulus of rupture 120, modulus of elasticity 14. Compared to the figures for spotted gum (which is considered one of the better gums for self bows) ; J/hardness 11, density 950 kg/m...

Re: Flatline opus 1&2

Yeah Kim, Knife handles and limb tips is about the size of it. I've been very lucky to get the opportunity to find and collect Conkerberry of this size. When these bows are finished I'm pretty sure they will be the only two of there kind in the world (hope I don't screw it up  )and if it grew l...

My advice is don't take short-cuts Steve, in my experience short-cuts are the longest distance between two points  . I'd go the techniglue.

Re: Flatline opus 1&2

I've decided to put a little Beefwood into the mix on these bows, that way I'll have a bit of all the timbers we collected on our timber hunting trip (then they will be kind of 'story bows', if you know what I mean). I've also decided to grind the Conkerberry down as thin as I can and use it as vene...

Re: Flatline opus 1&2

I've made a bit more progress over the last few days because my car blew a head gasket on the way home from work on Friday, so I've been ducking out to the shed every now and then to get a break from the quoting and book work I keep trying to avoid and no longer have an excuse to, cause I can't get ...

You might like to check this out, http://sticknstring.webs.com/ferretsboardbow.htm I used it to make my first self bow out of a piece of Tulip Oak I pulled out of my timber rack, worked quite well, but I ended up breaking it when re tillering it after backing it with bamboo. Definitely worth a look ...

Re: Dust Extraction

Nice bit of work Daryl. I have a dust extractor on my band saw and an industrial vacuum on my lam grinder which generates plenty of suction at the right point, picks up around 99% of the dust. I also have the advantage of living in a really warm climate so I work with both ends of my shed open and h...

Given a choice between my mates black widow at 50# and this MC2 I'd take the MC2, no hesitation. Thanks again Rob :!:  8) This MC2 can shoot heavy arrows. I have built some aluminiums up to 550 grains and they are flying straight up to ~25m at the least. The arrows hit really hard. What blow...
