Re: Flatline opus 1&2
Hard to say Jeff, I've only been using it for two years, in that time the first bits I used have lost a Little color but not enough to be a concern, but I reckon to much sun exposer wouldn't be good.

Re: Flatline opus 1&2
Lookin' good Rob! I must say, you are meticulous, which is a requirement for this line of work, eh? I reckon every trad archer should see this thread to see what kind of effort goes into making a bow. Can't wait to see the finished product! Thanks Chriss, Andy, Here's my "simple" philosop...

BTW I'm doing the thread in detail like this cause when I first started learning about this stuff I would have loved to have found one with all the "assumed" bits and pieces included

Not so close KellyG, I reckon it's about 20% done, things go a bit slower from here on, it starts to get a bit fiddly now   . Come on Jeff, you should know better than to say something like that this early in the game   . Jeez Scott, I was only joking, but thanks any way! Nice ...

Re: Flatline opus 1&2
A bit more progress this afternoon. After removing the excess glue from the second limb I squared the butt ends on my miter saw and put them back on the form to mark the position for the knock grooves and the cut for the tips. SDC11179.JPG These marks are squared across both sides of the limb for re...

The other limb is in the heat box until 8.00 tonight then I'll turn it off and let it cool overnight. meanwhile, here's the first one out of the form. SDC11171.JPG Nice and tidy, that's one reason why I wrap the limb instead of trying to lay the plastic over the form. Before I started doing it this ...

Re: Tulip oak Vs Vert boo lams?
Could be from the outer layers of the intermediate wood, Tulip Oak trees have very light sap wood then a thick layer of darker intermediate wood which has similar properties to the heart wood except it's not quite as dense, then the heart wood which usually gets darker the closer you get to the cent...

Very nice Daryl, simple and elegant. N G Rose wood hey! I've often thought about using it but thought the grain length might be too short, have you used it before? and if so how does it perform?

Re: Flatline opus 1&2
Thanks guys, I like the idea of taking it from bush to bow too KellyG, kinda makes it more holistic hey. I didn't manage to get the limb in the heat box last night but I did this morning. Didn't take any photos during the lay-up, it's always a bit too hectic and sticky for camera work, so took one u...

Thanks blokes :) . It must be the Steve King books I've been reading lately   . OK, time to start actually making the bows (at last :D ) The next part is IMO one of, if not the most critical stage in making a three piece take down; forming the limb planes. If they are not perfectly aligned in relation to each other then what ever error exists will be exponentially magnified at ...

Beautiful work Daryl, how do you do that veneer splicing I'd love to learn that. I know what you mean about being afraid to use it Jeff, but it's all I use. I've complained to binghams about it because I buy my glass in lots of 100 strips (to bring the price down) and when you make that kind of inve...

Re: Tulip oak Vs Vert boo lams?
Tell you what Rod, PM me your address, give me the colour, length and width of the lams you need and I'll send you a stick. By colour I mean red or blush or some where in between. Hey LB Rod, if it's that light a colour then it's probably from a young Blush Tulip Oak tree, it's one of those woods th...

Re: Tulip oak Vs Vert boo lams?
You have it right Rod, an eazy way to remember is, Quarter-cut is the face thats exposed if you quarter a log. What you can do Rod is have a look at the end of your board and measure the grouth rings tangentaly, (don't know if thats a real word   ) if you can find one thats wide enough fo...

Hey KellyG, I'm watching your thread too and I'm glad it's you and not me trying to straighten that piece of Osage, you are doing really well so far. Re: Tulip oak Vs Vert boo lams?
Hey Rod, I use heaps of Tulip Oak but not a lot of bamboo. but I have noticed that the darker the Tulip Oak is, the denser and heavier it is and thus the higher the poundage is. I use the same figures for Tulip Oak as I use for Tas black wood if that helps. My guess is the bamboo would be quite simi...

Re: Big Brother's first trad bow - fourth update
Thats a nice curve in those limbs Rod. very hard to pick which should be the top or bottom, I reckon when you measure the tiller both limbs will be the same or that close it wont mater. I don't think it's really necessary to cook the overlays on (I don't) and I would be worried about the heat affect...
