Re: Workshop Pic's [ image heavy ]

Rod showed me his new linisher just after he got it , I was so impressed I asked him to adopt me but he reckoned he had too many kids already and was going to have to sell a few off to buy more bow building tools

Toby While I have used Mortice and tenon and also dowels in the past I now mainly use my pocket hole jig for furniture , for the bench the frame is made up of 90x35 studs and have glued and screwed and used pocket holes in such a way to make it much stronger than I could with just mortice and tenon ...

Toby The work bench is pretty solid , it stands 950mm high and is 1000mm x 1950mm , the top is made up from 3 sheets of 18mm MDF , it takes 4 large men and a hernia just to drag it , I drew up the plans on my cad program but lost them when the old computer Harddrive died , I have the timber rack for...

Workshop Pic's [ image heavy ]

In the past I've been involved in forums where one of the favorite posts was one of workshop pictures , it's always good to see how other people setup their workshops to give us ideas as how to better our own , so I thought I'd give it a go here and see if I can get people interested in posting pict...

Re: Quiver trends for bowhunters??

I use a hip quiver , one upon a time I used to make quite a lot of quivers and arms guards to pay for my archery addiction , I used to make about 4 kinds of back quivers and they were quite popular but I couldn't use any of them , this was due to some shoulder injuries , I find it difficult to reach...

You can make up a cutter like you would for strip cutting leather , you use a couple of blocks of wood and a blade from a Stanley knife

Simon

When I used to use it for woodturning I just used to cover it in bees wax or furniture wax and sometimes Danish oil but have seen it covered in varnish

But remember unless the timber has a lot of tannin it just looks discoloured , best to test it on scrap

Re: Self Bow Finishes and Darkening White Wood

There is a process wood workers use called ebonizing , depending on the amount of tannin in the timber you are using you can get a dull grey to a rich dark black , It's been a few years since I used it last but it worked great with some timbers , to make the ebonizing fluid all you do is get some st...
