Re: Heat treatment

When I said lowered into the oil bath i really should have said 'plunged' into it so the contractions caused by the molecular structure of the heated blade returning to a more normal unstressed state are uniformly acted on by the cooling process.Vegetable oil is okay for quenching as you say.

Heat treatment

Hope you dont mind a small piece of advice when tempering or annealing your own blades. It's better to use a 'clean oil' rather than used sump oil as sump oil is full of impurities that can permeate the molecular structure of the blade and affect it, and when quenching a blade lower it point first i...

Re: Postage for a longbow from the US

I have had bows with a value of over $300 go through without a worry. I think the limit is way up there, like $500 or $1000 but I could be entirely wrong. It seems to be a hodge podge with their postal service. I will see what happens with the long bow I have on order.

Re: Postage for a longbow from the US

It appears that in the US there are different conditions depending on where one lives, or at least how lenient the postal service is in that area. I've had smaller lighter compound bows cost more than longer heavier ones. Suppose which coast its coming from might also be a factor. After reading othe...

Re: Another Moron at Work

Fifty people can do great work in educating Joe Public about ethical bow hunting and archery in general and one moron can blow that into the weeds in seconds. There is a lunatic greenie group called PETA which some people may not be aware of and they are funded by huge petro chemical dollars. Althou...

Re: Postage for a longbow from the US

I will be waiting anxiously to see what happens when the unfinished bow I 've ordered is shipped. I've asked 3 times if the shipping cost was right and received an affirmative response each time . The amount quoted was $39.99 US and that is a one piece bow of 72''! Bet I'll get a request for additio...

Some said they wouldnt do it because of cost involved , some quoted up to $150 US. This one maker has a price of $39.99 for shipment to Australia. I have quizzed him several tim...
