Re: New archer buying his first traditional bow! Wisdom soug
Mate, I'd suggest getting a samick sage with two sets of limbs, just like your idea with the bear. You could buy that for less than just a set of bear limbs. Then after you've been shooting a while you'll have had more exposure to different bows and ideas and will be more confident dropping some ser...

Re: The disparity between some US trad sites and Ozbow.
To be honest, this conversation seems a little unhinged from reality. I've spent a fair bit of time in the US and my experience is that you won't find more passionate and interested bowhunters anywhere. Their base of 'traditionalists' support a healthy national trad organisation, a plethora of trad ...

I don't know Mick, I suspect it may be a case of only getting a small view of what is naturally going to be a more diverse group (courtesy of more people being involved) that's lead you to thinking Americans have a very different view of trad archery.

Re: 3 piece take-down longbows
there is no such thing as a three piece take down longbow The modern version is nothing more than a take-down recurved bow riser with straighter limbs LONGBOW: 1. Traditional type of English bow usually made from a single stave of wood, whose limb configuration is almost at thick as it is wide, and...

Re: Bows; lengths, curves and handles..
Mick I haven't taken anything with it. Pound for pound I reckon it's the slowest production bow I've shot. It's by no means terrible, I just reckon you could probably add 5 or 10 pounds to what you might think would be adequate and shoot 8-9gpp to get the most out of it. I bought mine as I had acces...

Re: Bows; lengths, curves and handles..
It is incredibly high Daryl, the recommendation from Bear is 8-9" and that is set at about 9. So for me that's about a 19" powerstroke. You won't be surprised to hear that I've never received any string slap from that bow

Hey guys, I was fiddling with some bows this morning and just happened to think these three looked neat lined up alongside one another, from shortest to longest, most recurved to least and most forward handle to straightest... http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r223/ausjim/BowComparison.jpg http://i...

Re: Where does your Money/Effort go?
Jim. The 'Law of Diminishing Returns' applies to everything ... however I would still to prefer to put my effort/money into performance rather than looks. I suppose that's true Grahame. To elaborate my point a little, I've never shot a bow and thought "If only this bow performed a little bette...

Re: ARCHERY PARTICIPATION .....
Am I the only one that is irked by crossbows being included in 'archery' statistics? I do feel bad for crossbow enthusiasts, but beyond discussions of ballistics, I'm sure their art has a lot more in common with rifle shooting than archery. Or am I being unreasonable?

Re: Where does your Money/Effort go?
I think if folks weren't willing to sacrifice performance for aesthetic or romantic reasons bowhunting wouldn't exist. So we all fall in that spectrum somewhere. After all, there is something very visually pleasing about a shaft arcing through the air to a target, regardless of whether it's getting ...

Re: IS THIS AN AESTHETICALLY PLEASING BOW?
It doesn't please me Dennis. I can't really figure out why, beyond the handle looking big and bulbous. I think the handle colours/pattern look out of place against the natural colour of the bow. I can't help but think a bit of square wood wrapped with leather would be a lot nicer.

Longbows In The Far North - E. Donnal Thomas Jr
If you don't know who Don Thomas is you can read a short bio here: http://donthomasbooks.com/index.html In this book Don Thomas recounts a bunch of hunts in Alaska and his very exciting expedition in Russia's eastern wilderness (apparently he was the first American to bowhunt there). Every chapter i...

Re: "Cape York" - Tusker Productions
I just finished watching it too Jack. I don't think it's his best (he set that bar pretty high with the boars and barra series) but as he explains it's an extra challenge setting up a camera then stalking in the last bit for the shot, trying to keep it all in the frame when he doesn't have a hunting...

Re: When did 3 fingers under become popular in Australia?
In 2000 or 2001, Darryl Reeks sold me my first bow and gave me my first archery lesson. He taught me to shoot 3 under. I've since switched to split, just because it feels a little more... I don't know.. maybe it's because that's what I saw in Robin Hood books when I was a kid. Two good arguments I'v...

Clint I was looking at kids arrows recently and the two at the top of the list I found in Australia were 25#, 5/16" Douglas Fir from tradbits, not weight matched for about $3 a shaft and 26" fibreglass arrows, fletched, nocked and field points, 10 pack was about $40 from apex archery. I en...

Rod, it should be good in the close stuff. I'm interested in how it feels compared to my 64" longbow, which is the longest bow I've ever shot and have a fair bit of confidence with. The take down system is some kind of bolt rather than a sleeve. I reckon that Big Jim's method looks pretty bulle...

I don't think I've ever suffered from it. Although while shooting this afternoon, I had drawn the arrow about 3 inches off full draw when my son (3) who was standing right behind me, said "fire dad!". Without any thought at all I let go of the string. Blew my group right out. Little bugger...

so what do we call a bow with D/R limbs other than a D/R bow? Bjorn, You call it by its proper name depending on what type of bow it is. Mick, it's brown stained birch burl on the belly and the riser is walnut dymonwood. The belly looks very nice in the picture, although I don't actually know what 'birch burl' is

I'm not so keen on the Bearpaw, (Black Widow lookalike) though, with it's massive riser, but some people like that sort of thing. Mick, I've never liked them either, but after seeing some of ze Germans, which seem a little simpler and natural looking than the widows I've seen, they're growi...
