Re: Damascus Blade

No worries pass on the info so we all learn.
Just don't use it when the steel is hot for obvious reasons.

Re: Damascus Blade

I read the other night that kerosene as flux is to the forge I went. Using the same material as the blade as I get it for free. 11 layers stacked, tack welds, soaked in kero while the forge heated up. To my surprise it worked. The stack was 28mm wide before forge welding. After the weld I turned it ...

Re: Damascus Blade

Here is where I'm up to. I have been interrupted with work so it is taking a bit of time.
I have started to file in the bevels and I am about half way so a quick etch.
A bit hard to see but there looks to be a nice pattern.

Re: Damascus Blade

True Mick, this is a learning curve for me. I have not been successful in this type of Damascus before so I did not want to waist money on good steel. But having said that I have made scrapers and blades from both the steels I used and I did a test to see how hard this would go. It skates a file. Ev...

Damascus Blade

Hi all as you may know I have been dabbling in the dark art of knife making. I had a go at Damascus last weekend, as the wife/boss was working/away from home and did not give me any jobs to do. I grabbed some scrap from work in the lines of packing strap and what is called wear bands, spring steel I...

It should be ok but you could give your bow a few coats of gun stock oil. I use that on my bows.

Re: Joes Ancient Orange Mead

Rod I think brewing of any kind and drinking it, goes hand in hand with shooting. Not while doing it of cause as that is not safe  , but when we have finished for the day.
Shooting a bow is hard work after all.

Re: Joes Ancient Orange Mead

Hi Rod this was only as a added hint. Rehydrating the yeast is not a starter it is just yeast in water to wake it up. A starter will increase the cell count of the yeast. There are heaps of different techniques in brewing. I have not made many Meads as I am not a fan but I have made beer for nearly ...

Re: Joes Ancient Orange Mead

When I brew my beer I rehydrate the yeast, add yeast to room temp boiled water, boil the kettle pure a cup cover let cool, add yeast let sit for 20mins, stir add to beer or cider. This wakes the yeast so it start to work. I read this in a brewing book a few yeasts ago. Might be good here. I will hav...

That is ok, I was just saying what I had done.
I polished the blade, harden and temper, repolish then etch in ferric chloride.
This is what it was like before hardening.
