Re: Some of my latest
Hey Rod, I reckon what you bought was indeed Coconut wood, which is a nice timber though not as strong or dense as Black Palm. The real McCoy PNG/NTHAust Black Palm only grows to around 250mm/10" in diameter max. The biggest board I've managed to mill out of the mature logs I've collected is 60...

Been real busy lately so here's some pics of what I've been doing. Seems like everyone wants a Raptor  . The first one is Black Gidgee and Silver Ash with Black Palm limbs. Hee Hee, must track that fella down and twist his arm a bit,,, I hear he has some more "Orange" Boxwood on the way. Can't wait to see the final product. On a different note, the last 6 bows I've made all have Black Palm in them  , think I'm going to have to take a trip up north with ...

Re: Black Palm Raptor
Hey Muz, where did you find your palm? and how thick is the usable part of the log? If it is thin and light in colour it's probably a fairly young tree, I've found they have to be at least 25-30 years old before they are worthwhile milling. How about a few photos. I'd like to see what you're working...

Re: Black Palm Raptor
interesting Rob - I am really surprised we don't see it more often in bows given it's beauty - as you have shown. That's probably due to it being a very rare Timber more than any other reason, it's very hard to come by even here in Far North QLD where it grows. And once you get hold of a log the re...

Thanks guys.
Stan. Yes it is hard to work with and does indeed splinter along the grain easily but is unbelievably strong across the grain. And speaking of splinters, the splinters from this are every bit as nasty as the splinters from the bow tuff glass.

I use Toll ipec, and after I had turned up with I think my third one piece bow to send at a rate of $65 they offered to give me a fixed rate at $55 anywhere in Aust. Never had any problems with them at all, so I'm happy.

Re: What Pens best for writing on Bow??
Hey Muz, I use "uni-ball Signo" water based gel/paint pens which are the only ones I've found that don't run when you apply solvent based coatings. Don't know how well they would go with a wipe on finish though, I think it would rub off. But they do come in a good range of colours. Cheers,...

Re: Spraying question for bowers
Hi Tyler, This is what I do. Bend up a bit of stiff wire so you get a wedge fit on your tips so the wire pinches the tip and only touches it at two small points on either side and move it to a slightly different position for each coat and move it to where the string will sit for the last coat. Here'...

Re: Ul or ULS glass
I only use UL glass, I have been told by Bingham's that the scrim in the ULS is mainly for lateral strength during construction, once its glued up in a bow it makes very little difference. I'll ask, what is the difference between the two? woodie The difference is the UL glass only has fibres running...

Nice Rob, is that your Raptor form? No Rod, believe it or not it's a reflex deflex form :shhh: . I'm teaching a young fella (very talented self-bow maker) how to make composite bows and he wanted to do a R/D and the first one has come out quite nice though a little heavier than intended. I'll leave...

Re: Little steps
Unfortunately when I glued mine up my back glass moved some 6mm from the rest of the stack so I was only just able to cut the bow shape out. Another lesson learnt as I never used tape to hold it all in place as I was struggling a bit with sticky gloves and was worried about the glue starting to go ...

Re: Setting up a takedown recurve case
Great work on the case Rod. I know what you mean about the foam infill, I just about fell over when I got the price for foam to do my daughters one piece case.
As far as things to put in it,,, I reckon Daryl pretty well covered it, any more than that and you'd have to put wheels on it

First Take-down Raptor
Well due to multiple requests I've developed a take-down version of the Raptor. Very happy with the result  8) . It's exactly the same as the one piece Raptor but with a little more mass in the riser which makes it even nicer and more stable to shoot. This (number) one is for a lucky fella ...

Re: Questions about carbon
Thanks Stuart, good info mate. Was the bow you used it in a recurve or longbow? I would imagine it would have more effect on performance in a bow with a smaller over-all core stack. Rob, did the customer mention why they wanted carbon limbs? Not in so many words Daryl, but I imagine it is simply for...

Hey Bjorn, I'm with Rod there Black Gidgee is about as dark as it gets with out going the full Ebony. I reckon Black Gidgee and Red bean might give you what you're after. Though I have got some Aust Ebony lurking around the shed ;) . The Red timber in this riser is Red bean/ Miva Mahogany. http://ww...
