Re: What attributes make for a sweet shooting osage bow?
but I could get interested in making one that I could draw back to 28 inches. I would imagine that it would have to be somewhere in the vicinity of 60 inches and with a fully working 'handle'. Hi Mick, is the 28 inch draw AMO or DLPP [true draw length]? I think the Al Herrin design would work well,...

Re: What attributes make for a sweet shooting osage bow?
Looks a lot better Mick, Heat treat into 3 " of reflex with veg oil and a heat gun spending 30 minutes to an hour on each limb working from the outside in until the osage plasticizes. You will see when that happens. Allow it to re hydrate for 3-4 days then check the tiller. You stand to gain a ...

Hi Mick, have you got a pick of the hinge? I am happy to pike (shorten the limbs) heat treat it and re tiller it if you want to try to save it and pick up some weight. Or someone else may like to offer the same. Cheers Steve

Re: Making My Longbow
The bottom limb should be marginally stiffer, I get the impression from your photos that it is pulling into your hand quite firmly so taking a bit of the bottom limb should work for you. Go by feel, if thats what it feels like then it is probably correct. Set is pretty great so it must be a marginal...

Just looked up Beef wood to see if it on the no cut list, there are about five woods that are called Beef wood so could be any number of them I suppose. If you are seeing plenty then it probably isn't that one . Steve

Re: Bilaminate Bamboo Flooring Bow.
I have been looking into the urea formaldehyde glue used for bamboo flooring and after a bit of research I wouldn't use the bamboo flooring in my bows at all, it is not recommended for outdoor situations at all, due to it's inability to withstand moisture and changes in humidity levels and temps, b...

Re: Buildalong#2- Hickory pickhandle longbow
Hi Sabinus, looking at the pics of the back of your hickory, The growth rings appear to be violated? Apparently hickory can tolerate this a little but you may want to chase a ring while you still have plenty of material to work with to ensure you don't fail in tension. Looking good otherwise. Cheers...

Re: Laminated Bow info.
Hi Colin, A thicknesser wont really be suitable as you require a key for the glue to adhere to and for doing fine work the thicknesser will just destroy the lamination when it gets to thin (not to mention it may be impossible to do a taper. A spindle sander can work on a small scale but the abrasive...

Re: Tillering, with a twist
Hi Sabinus, What weight is it now? If it is light it is going to have little resistance to twisting. Imagine a thin lamination and how hard it would be to keep it from doing the same thing. I am assuming the thickness is consistent from side to side of the limb? Steve

Re: It's bending! It's bending!
I'd ignore the gizmo. It's really only any good if you're doing circular tiller, and I personally think training the eye would be hindered by relying on a tool to make marks for you. The bend is looking nice and even at the moment. I'd get the long string as short as you can and still get the loops...

Re: Question about sinew
Hi Ben, what glue did you use to glue the handle on with? If you used epoxy and it has popped it may be working to hard at the fades so an adjustment may be in order. The other concern may be that your fades may be to abrupt into the limb so pictures may help us advise. Sinew may work but it is a bi...

Time to get a Toyota Sue. You will be surprised at the maintenance cost savings over a long period. I believe Holden have done this to themselves failing to produce vehicles that todays market wants plus other factors have contributed. One little example of how to lose a market is putting a motor in...

There seems to be a fair amount of combined knowledge on here, so I'd thought I'd ask a quick question or two about bow strings. Re: It's bending! It's bending!
Looking good, avoid the temptation of working to much at the handle. When I do my bendy handle bows I leave the centre section rigid until I am approaching full draw as that is when you want it to start bending ever so slightly. All I do is the occasional scrape to bring it down but keep it thicker ...

Jeff and I went out last weekend for a hunt. Jeff filled the freezer for us with a few pigs and rabbits. We enjoyed a young goat on the spit while out there and had plenty of misses on fox coming in to the whistle. The dogs are happy. Steve

Hi Dave, I have a few sets of stainless insert and hardened steel allen head bolts with brass bezels available for the same price of the posted Binghams ones if you like.
