Gundy those knives are beautiful. I normally don't like the shape of the 'scandia's' but those are both really lovely. I see the skookum is available in O1. What is yours made of? That O1 hunter I bought off you years ago has butchered and skinned more than a dozen sambar now and is still like a raz...

Re: newbie - where to start :)
Hey Bill... good deal getting your partner into Archery. As you say the lighter poundage is probably the way to go. In my experience the problem with light poundage bows is that you really need to get fussy about your arrows. A small difference in spine or head weight can make a HUGE difference in w...

In Collapse there is a chapter on Australia's poor soils... low in carbon and nutrients. Basically Australia's geology is some of the oldest on earth and billions of years of rainfall have leeched out all the nutrients. Half of north america was glaciated and so the crust was all ground up and these...

These are all made of Cambrian volcanic greenstone or amphibole hornfels from Central Victoria. The two on the right are grooved and notched for hafting. They could be anywhere from 200 to 5000 years old. The one on the top left is from a different tool tradition and is most probably older than 5000...

The real solution to this problem would be to make roo's fair game. The whole idea that you can't hunt the continents number one prey animal is a total joke! If I want some meat or a skin why should I have to run around looking for a feral??? 60,000 years of hunting and eating can't be wrong! Someti...

Re: Australian Aborigines and the bow
The woomera or spear-thrower seems to have been invented independently in Australia sometime during the Holocene<after the ice age> period. There is NO archaeological evidence to suggest the presence in Australia of the woomera during the Pleistocene <ice age>. It appears in the archaeological recor...

From "Archaeology of the Dreamtime" by Josephine Flood... a good book if you're interested in that sort of stuff. The bow and arrow were used in Papua and in the Torres Strait islands, and they were seen by Captain Cook on small islands immediately off Cape York, but they were not used by ...

Re: Longbow Back Quiver...!
I've been doing a bit of research on tanning lately. A bloke told me that the reason goat skins smell is that the skin can contain 8-10% by weight of fat. You have to get the fat out of the skin BEFORE you tan it. He uses acetone. You end up with microscopic voids in the hide that weaken it. One of ...

Frisky Longbow
This bow was made by Arthur Fisk of Bathurst. I bought it second hand to use as a hunting bow. It's 60# @ 28 inches. 68 inches, it has a zebrano riser with brown glass on the back and clear on the belly. The first thing I noticed was how much more nearly centre shot the shelf had been cut than on my...

It was actually a really good hunt.... the spot I go to is only 7 minutes drive from home and it is an old farmhouse with no one living in it.... lots of peppercorns around an old tumbledown house and a big warren under the house. I drove up to the entrance road and parked a couple of hundred of yar...

New Bow and New Hat.. both blooded.
I bought a new bow, a Frisky longbow and it arrived this week. 60 pounds at 28 inches and it spits out a good straight arrow. This morning my new hat from Afghanistan via Al Kidner arrived. I put the two together and went out this arvo and got this nice big fat golden bunny. Thanks again Al, I love ...

That photo is a cracker. Like Moreton says it will drive most people conditioned to the 'kindly, wise old elephant' meme bonkers. That is all anti's, almost all 'the general public' and even some hunters. My own opinion is kill anything that floats your boat. That's what it means to be the top preda...

Some interesting ideas there. I don't think turning them into 100,000 string silencers would impress my mate... lol. Suggesting that we spend $25000 to have them tanned would make him shoot ME! My post was more about letting anyone else who actually tries to make money off them know what w...
