Re: Banksia bow failure
Did that as well Bob. Think I dropped it about 20lbs.
Once I've done a couple more bows I'll have a better projection of weights to go by. But these are valuable lessons learnt and hopefully not repeated.

Re: I've got the Greatest Friends on Earth
Hope everything works out for you at work Perry.
It's nice to hear there are still generous people around.
Good luck with the back mate. I know how over whelming back injuries can be.

Re: Keeping skins
I was taught similar way with bunnies but we used fencing wire bent to make a "V". Don't ever remember salting the ultra thin rabbit skins just hanging them up to dry. Definitely want to salt bigger skins as soon as practically possible. The sooner the better to prevent the bacteria settin...

Re: Banksia bow failure
Have only used UL glass so far Rod.
Anyway the next attempt is in oven this morning. All Sheoak veneers and solid Sheoak riser. Fingers crossed it comes out close to right weight.
More lessons learnt the hardway.

Re: Banksia bow failure
Righto...starting to make more sense now. The bow was over targeted weight so i had reduced the limb width from fades right through to the tips. It was at the point if I went any further i thought I'd lose stability at the tips. As i had to make a few adjustments to correct some minor twisting. I ha...

Re: Banksia bow failure
I use smooth on glue. The glue join didn't fail. The bow was 74#@28". 89# at my 31" draw. Rod and Bob are correct in that it appears to have started in the corner of the shelf. At the time of failure it was at rest on the work bench while strung. Put it down to a bad piece of timber I think.

Banksia bow failure
Cut the window in yesterday morning before work and left it strung. Came home to find the Jarrah in riser had split. Wasn't a happy camper. Put one coat on the Banksia to show you guys the grain. Used Woody Pear and Banksia veneers, the woody pear is really dark under the glass. Don't think I'd wais...

Re: Hammocks
Snake skins keep it all tidy. Just a protective layer. I personally like them but you could use what ever. A smallish dry bag would work well. I need to work out a system for using it on the ground to keep netting up. Used mine on Buff trip last year in October and loved it. You won't be disappointed.

Re: Hammocks
No worries at all with mozzies. The bottom has two skins. Comes in handy as you can slide reflector pad in between them.
Make sure you get the snake skins with it. They make it easy.

http://www.mosquitohammock.com/junglehammock.html I use this hammock and can sleep on my side in it. My mate has a Hennessy and hates it. It bananas heeps even when taught. He ended up sleeping on the ground. I use the foil windshield protector to reflect heat when its cold. Good for hiking and can ...

Re: Made a couple more.
Hey Rob, yes I did mate. Just glued up another last night. Have used Woody Pear with Banksia as Veneers and Banksia/Jarrah and Blackbutt in riser. Very excited with this one as the Banksia is very unique. Aiming for 70# give or take for my deer trips next year starting in April but will be my seroiu...

Re: Gringa Longbow is going fishing
Normally less than 2m. Carry a big handline on belt hook. Strip off 10m or so to handline on bow. Once you've shot you hold bow position until all the line has come off. While this is happening you grab the big handline from waist and then walk back up onto beach and drag him in. The ally sleeve is ...

Re: Made a couple more.
Hi Greybeard. Can't say I've had any issues caused by the fade outs. I didn't think they were that bad. What problems would you expect? The only problems I've had has been air pockets under the glass caused by improper fit of riser section as its difficult to shape in this design. The other problem ...

Haven't down any bowfishing in a long time. Anything above 4ft is fair game. Hoping for something bigger than 6ft. Usually walking in water and only a couple of meters from them, see how game I get.

Made a couple more.
Made two more bows. The bottom is for a friend and came in at 42#@28". Has Western Woody Pear on the outside of the riser with Blackbutt and Jarrah. It has Western Red Cedar veneers. My best work so far and I'm very happy with it. The one above it has Palm wood, Tuart and Jarrah in the riser an...

Gringa Longbow is going fishing
Gearing up for some serious sharks, dug up my old hard core fishing arrows I made years ago. They weigh in at 3200 plus grains and come out very nice from 83# Gringa. Hoping weather is favourable in Shark Bay come mid January. Arrows need a bit of loving, new nocks, wire trace, and sleeves, etc. Hav...

Re: Black Palm Raptor
G'day Rob, My brother bought 4 palm posts years ago for a Bali type theme gazebo. There about 2.2m x 300mm at a guess. Just got the other 3 last weekend. They've been sitting in the old man's shed for 8 or more years. There pretty hard to handle by yourself and run through the band saw. Will endeavo...
