Since remodelling the end of my shed (building man cave / bar) I've moved some of my gear around. Well yesterday I reconstructed my tiller board and accurately plotted the weight of the small bow. Here's the results, will get around to the 2nd bow in the near future.

Backpacking TD Hybrid build
Well yesterday started with the intention of making a recurve bow, I started cutting up a slab of Marri which was given to me by a mate. He actually gave me a trailer load of them. White ants had started to get into the bottom of the stack and most have bad splits in places. He told me if I can't sa...

Bows with a couple of coats on, will probably rub them both back and put the VHT on when it turns up. Will take some better photos when finished. Cheers Muz

Re: Bow Finishes - Whats everyone using?
Thanks Matt and Jeff I tried sourcing the "VHT Wheel Paint Gloss Clear" today at several shops in town with no luck. Found it online and have ordered a can of matte finish to try. https://www.kingswoodcountry.com.au/buy/vht-wheel-paint-matte-clear/SP190 While in town I ended up grabbing a ...

Re: Heavy Single Bevel Broadheads
Love your ingenuity Gazza great work.
I have 190gn Tusker concordes that were supplied as single bevel in 2014. Have 100gn steel adaptors for them, was going to use them on my NT trip but went with the Outbacks.

Bow Finishes - Whats everyone using?
I'm chasing info on what finishes people are using on their bows. I'm still using exterior varnish but would like to improve on it. Something hard wearing that can take a few bumps. I see Minwax is popular, is it hard wearing? What about oils and waxs? Thinking of trying a two pack satin lacquer. An...

Great read, I'm so jealous. Wish we had that selection of game over here in WA. After chasing Sambar the last two years in Vic I have the deer bug big time. Look forward to the 2nd half

Re: New bow build - been a while
Cheers, just need to finish the coats off. Wasn't real motivated after work but did manage to cut up a slab of Marri, reducing it for veneers. Got a bit side tracked as I had to keep checking on the temp on my beer fridge.

Re: Heavy Single Bewvel Broadheads
Hi Ian, I'm a big fan of heavy single bevel broadhead although I've never seen this type before. I prefer and have had great success with Outback 220gn single bevel broadheads resulting in very quick ethical kills. They have the traditional 3/1 ratio which aids in the cutting effect. At the end of t...

Re: New bow build - been a while
Had a good run today, got the bow out of the oven this morning and got stuck into it.(Oven had been off since 10pm last night) Marked the limbs out prior to gluing up and took extra care while wet in the form. Reduced them on the big boy sander and perfect. I've only just discovered random orbital s...

Re: New bow build - been a while
Don't worry I'd rather be heading your way and get back up into the mountains chasing those cagey deer than go overseas for a bloody wedding. I get it pretty good so can't complain to much. Maybe the next trip might have to be 4 weeks instead of 3. The bow finished up at 35#@28" and is quiet fu...

Your doing well with the bunnies. The little buggers can be a real challenge at times and often jump the string.
Good luck to your young bloke.

Re: New bow build - been a while
G'day Steve, I'm looking forward to seeing them in a bow also. I don't think I'm going to be able to get over to Vic next year (spewing). Will have to be 2019. Spent a few more hours on the bow this arvo and managed to get it finished with its first coat on. 20171229_163535_1514539637172_resized.jpg...

Re: New bow build - been a while
Totally agree Wayno. Up early as usual and took the bow out of the oven for an inspection before heading of to work. So far so good. 20171228_052215_1514457761796_resized.jpg Worked on the bow for just under 2 hours this arvo. Marked out limbs with template and reduced on sander. Added limb tips and...

New bow build - been a while
G'day, its been a while. Been wanting to build some new bows but for many reasons I never seem to get started. Well today I broke the drought. With a bow cooking in the oven at the moment. Had to revise my notes to remember a few things. The plan is to make a light weight one peice to get the hang o...

Hi Ian, you'll have no problems with that weight bow using 10 grains per pound or greater arrow with a solid two blade of your choosing.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Hi Cadet, chasing sawn timber if possible, thanks anyway. Hi Steve, we're leaving Bunbury on Saturday 10th June and should be there by the Monday morning the 12th. We plan on leaving to head back home on Friday morning the 30th at the latest. If possible riser blocks would be minimum of 650mm long x...

Hi Steve, We're doing a 3 week trip driving over to the King Valley region to chase Sambar. Will be catching up with a mate in Castlemaine on the way through. Hoping to pick enough timber to make veneers and a some riser blocks for a couple of bows. Just chasing some variety to the WA timbers I've b...

Sourcing Black Wattle in Victoria
Hi Peoples, I'm driving over to Victoria in June for a hunting trip and was hoping to track down some timbers to bring back with me for future bow building.
In particular I'm interested in getting hold of some Black Wattle.
Any ideas?
Cheers Muz

Bow Quiver for me, Big Jims strap on 5 arrow. Very light and easy to put on / take off. Used Selway previously but to heavy and not a fan of there fixing systems.

First Hare
My recent trip to Victoria I managed my first Hare at 4m with my new takedown longbow. Being from Western Australia where there are no Hares its a big deal for me. I have been slowly getting all my ABA game species badges and now only have Deer left. Although there is 6 deer species (all east coast ...
