Hi! Thank you for the positive feedback on the static tip bows. I apologize for being a little brief in the detail of the bows construction but I found it was "a suck and see" type of exercise when I first started making these bows. Because I wanted to build durability into the bows I depa...

Archangel, Well done. The next one will be even better. The only time we fail is when we fail to try. Whilst playing around with an adjustable form for making bamboo backed bows I decided to find out how versatile this type of form was for making other styles of bows. The adjustable form is of the t...

Timmah, I forgot to mention to coat the silk with PVA as well as the back of the bow. Also apply the adhesive to the dull side of the silk. You will also find that you will have time to work out air bubbles and bring the adhesive to the top of the silk. Cut the silk over width and when the adhesive ...

Grahamea, Did you actually shoot any arrows to arrive at the figures listed. On the surface they may look impressive but do they count for much. As you stated you disregarded certain factors. Surely to state these figures you must have carried them out in a controlled enviorment using a shooting mac...

Timmah, PVA works well. You will need to seal the bow once the glue is totally dry. The silk won't do much to improve performance but it will give more integrety to the back of the bow. Japanese jockey silk is better than the silk used for suits. The silk changes colour once the glue has dried. Whit...

Timmah, It may be time to brace the bow with a string of the correct length. From previous experience I have found that a bow that appears to be correctly tillered on the tree changes it's characteristics once strung with the correct string. I think that the tiller string has a more gentle downwards...

Hi! Northwester, Select the right piece of timber, craft it correctly and treat it with respect and it will last for years. Bush billets cut and dried correctly (up to two years or more) seem to be superior to kiln dried milled boards. Billets cut from dry regions seem to have better properties than...

Hi Hugh,
I haven't used the glues that you've mentioned. One that seems to work well is Techniglue CA. I have used this product for several years as well as bowyers I have known for many years. For more info visit www.altcomposites.com or e-mail sales@altcomposites.com
Hope this info helps.

Another use for the lamination grinder. Remove the guide to clean up your handle section especially the fadeouts. Use the section of belt over the rubber wheel. It's great for doing curves etc. I also use it to help shape self bows as well as sanding the edges of laminated bows. Daryl. -------------...

Mick, Basically the setup is an 8 inch bench grinder mounted vertically on a modified bench. Attached to the shaft is a Multitool model 362. Once set up I attached a guide on a pivot point and a slot at the other end to vary the the distance between the guide and the grinding belt. A wing nut on the...

Timmah, When selecting floor boards try to select boards that have been cut from late growth not early (heartwood) as heartwood does not have as good bending properties. The flatter the growth rings the better. If you want to spend the extra dollars hard rock maple is a good choice but for your firs...

Edward, I have been grinding my own laminations for over three years. For a outlay of under $300-00 you can make your own lamination grinder. This enables you to select your own timbers and grind your own thicknesses down to under 2mm. and any length you require. Maximum width is about 45mm. It is a...

Hi! Timmah, You have made the right choice in wanting to make your own selfbow. Milled boards are a good way to learn the basics of making a selfbow and if it doesn't work all you have lost is a couple of dollars but will have probably gained a wealth of knowledge. Basic tools will do the job but wi...

June weekend

There are not enough long weekends in the year to host good shoots. Maybe we should petition governments for a four day long weekend every month. This would enable trad shoots to be spaced evenly during the year.
Best of luck with your shoot.
