16 to 22 March 2013 at the Tuggeranong Archery Club in Canberra.
I'll be there, but helping out rather than competing.

Re: Whats the best GPS
It all depends on what you need or want. Maps, colour, touch screen, whatever. As you add features you go up in price, but don't necessarily add accuracy, and if you don't need the features you're wasting money. My current bush unit is a Garmin GPS60 - like the 76 it's now discontinued - and about t...

Re: Finishing wood arrow shafts?
Things I've tried so far: 1) cabinet maker's wax - provides a beautiful finish, but doesn't seal the wood well and doesn't last. 2) shellac - seals the wood against humidity, but doesn't work well if things get wet. 3) tru-oil (gun stock finishing oil) - leaves a good finish, seals the wood well and...

Spot on. Getting yourself centered is an important part of getting your stance right. If I could remember all the things from tai chi as well as all the for archery then I'm sure that my form would improve.

Re: use of aluminium and carbon arrows at trad shoots
So if you are thinking of going to a shoot and they say Alloys are okay and you are not happy with that - don't go. The same if they say you must shoot woods and you want to shoot Carbons - then once again don't go. The "Market Place" is a very effective tool in sorting things out - it ju...

Re: Going Southpaw
Unfortunately not, but it's my problem not the bow's. I've joined the local AA club (Tuggeranong) and have been spending a bit of time there trying to sort out some nasty problems with my form. I think (hope) I'm finally getting on top of it.Brumbies Country wrote:I hope that longbow of yours is going really well.

Re: waterproofing wooden arrows
Birchwood Casey Tru oil, Gunstock oil. Wiped on left for a few minutes then rubbed in with Fine steel wool, then repeat. I use it on my bows aswell, great stuff and it goes along way. Buy it at any gunshop. Ditto. I have also tried Massey finish (two-pack epoxy diluted with metho or acetone). Haven...

Re: Going Southpaw
I'd have to run the gamut of an official competition, but I think the lesson might be once the passion for archery is diluted by another keen interest, then some propensity for target panic is removed. This was not a controlled study, and n=1, but it makes some sort of sense to me. Simon Welcome ba...

You went at the wrong time of year. In the middle of winter the critters are still there but most of the people aren't. It can be a bit hard to get around as a lot of the roads are closed, but there's always snowmobiles.

Re: Bow Licence in NSW???
The officers of those associations would most probably like to have more members. Licensing would deliver more members. Push comes to shove they would be more likely to accept and embrace licensing than not.....especially if they can also charge fees for training people. Everyone I've spoken to on ...

Hang on you were supposed to do your own calcs. But you already had the numbers  It would be inverse if draw weight went down as draw went up. And that's what I would have expect - though that's not what the numbers say I would get any concerns as far as anything goes in this example as th...

Re: Draw weight and draw length?
p.s. I get (r=0.29). However that is rubbish as at the moment there is no apparent dependency between those archers and their draw length and bow weight. Need a much bigger sample set. r of 0.29 is pretty low. If there was any correlation I'd be expecting 0.8 ( or -0.8 ) or better. If anything I'd ...

Re: Draw weight and draw length?
Would be interesting to try a correlation between draw length and stored energy, but there might be too many difficulties or assumptions needed for this to be feasible.GrahameA wrote:I would suggest that there is no correlation between Archer Draw Length and the Archer Draw weight for these Archers.

Glad it's only a draft as this seems to have slipped through: 8. A person under the age of 18 is not permitted to purchase any prohibited weapon including a crossbow. However, if this exemption applies to a person under 18, he or she may lawfully possess, use or carry a sword subject to the terms an...

All weights at my draw length of 33" WOW!!! How do you get arras long enough? Jeff Only using the longbows for target work so I draw the tips back onto the shelf. Use a 32" shaft, the pile adds a bit and the nock adds a bit more and it works out. It'll be time to do some footing i...

Re: A STUDY IN MEDIAEVAL FoC
It's my understanding - second hand and so may be of doubtful accuracy - that the reason the police are so concerned about crossbows are that they can be carried around cocked and loaded, and the availability of pistol crossbows. Pope Innocent II may be to blame too, as Grahame said.

Thanks for the post on the crossbow bolt -a more complex bit of workmanship than I imagined.
I didn't know crossbows were used in Africa, but I did know they had a long history in China, going back to at least the Zhou Dynasty.

Re: X7 Arrows with Screw-In points
I used to use X7 shafts (2512) with screw-in points in my compound shooting days, so the inserts have been around for a while.
I agree with the quality of the Top Hat points. I'm using the 125gr brass 3D forms on my target arrows. Only complaint is that you can't get 5/16 stainless in 125gr.

Depends. If it was for a mate I'd do it for free. If not I'd cover costs plus a bit. If it's a one-stringer maybe $5, a compound maybe $500.

Re: longbow grips - straight, dished and locator.
I prefer a locator grip as it seems to give me a more consistent hand position. It may just be that was what I was used to when I changed over from the dark side.
I haven't used straight or dished grips enough to figure out if I could make them work for me.

Tru-oil MUST be kept with the lid kept on or its drying thinners evaporate very quickly and it jells. Another thing is, keep the inside of the lid well wiped after each use as well as around the neck threads of the bottle otherwise it 'glues' the lid on and it is a bugger to get off again. A couple...
