Re: Who Uses A Wind Indicator When Hunting?

Because I wear a face mask when deer hunting I find I can miss subtle changes in air direction so carry a lighter with me, works a treat.

Re: RECURVED ELBs - TRUE OR NOT?

G'day guys, as for elb's having thin tips for recurving Imo thats just wrong. They had thin tips for performance, ask anyone who has made self bows and they will te you get the tips as small as possible. I've made reicas of Mary Rose bows with half inch tips and they shoot lovely. A heavier tip woul...

Re: RECURVED ELBs - TRUE OR NOT?

G'day Grahame, I'm going on the fact that English armies carried several bows for every archer and that as good as yew is as soon as a bow took a little set or lost just a bit of cast no archer would want to carry it into battle against an angry Frenchman or Scot.

Re: RECURVED ELBs - TRUE OR NOT?

Plausible for a favourite or hunting bow maybe but I don't reckon anyone in the army would bother when they could just go to the quarter master and grab another. Bows back then where a disposable item only designed to last a short time which is why we have hardly any left to study.

Re: RECURVED ELBs - TRUE OR NOT?

I agreed with Grahame in calling the bow a Burgundian bow because to me its not an elb. I also dont reckon the English would have recurved their bows because because the small gain in performance , if any, would not have been worth the extra work in building the bows. Remember they were building the...

Re: Free camping in VIC set to end

The interesting thing is that Labour left a 178 million black hole in parks funding!
However, politics aside the biggest threat to camping is from the national parks association. This bunch of greeny no hopers want to keep everyone out of parks full stop and create more parks!

Yeah would love to try hunting/eating goats one day , I hear its like a less fatty lamb? Funny I prob take deer hunting for granted and am jealous of those who live near goats but guess they probably are jealous of me hunting deer heaps.

Rusty camp oven, help!

Just pulled the camp oven out and to my dismay found it wet and rusty, sheds been leaking! So any tips on the best way to get it back to how it should be? Rub rust off and re-oil and bake?

Wow how great are those pics! That stags a cracker! The beauty of trail cams is they give you the time of day and so stop you wasting time setting up ambushes in spots where there are deer but where you may never see them in daylight.

Hey Nephew all good. I have two sons at school(both doing well) and it just gets up my goat a bit when boys get put down at school .Most teachers are great but at our primary school there are a couple of femmo's who only push the girls.

Re: You go, Girls!

Great to see more and more girls getting into archery but can't agree with your comment about the classroom! Girls often get more attention from teachers these days and there are at least five times as many girl only schools as there is boys and yet after all that boys often still outdo girls So IMO...

Re: Pacific Yew Billets from Oregon.........

Nooooo! Don't make a flat bow! You will regret it! Most Elb's are made from spliced billets. You only need a stave if your making a warbow style Elb. Later target styles don't need to bend through the handle at all. Your choice but you have the perfect timber for a great Elb, you can make a flat bow...

Re: Pacific Yew Billets from Oregon.........

Good looking billets there. That knot is nothing to worry about just leave a bit extra timber around the area.no other timber is as good as yew for bow making except possibly osage orange which I have no experience with . Don't worry about stuffing it up once you get started it just becomes another ...

Thanks Steve, some good ideas there..sinew would be best because it adds to the performance of the bow not just acting as a backing. Rawhide could be a goer as well.
Any one else had experience with style of bow making?

Sinew substitute

G'day guys, I'm looking at having a go at some American plains indians type bow and was wondering if anyone had some ideas on what I could use as a backing material as I don't think I'll be able to source any sinew. It will end up painted so as long as it sort of looks authentic then thats OK. Any i...

Tony I think one of the answers is possibly personnel changes in clubs? When I got involved with trad archery around ten years ago I really pushed for comps and at the same time Leigh and Gav were doing the same thing down at Geelong. None of the above people are now involved in running clubs. Proba...
