Re: Going Southpaw
Welcome back Simon. I think it's not so much that the passion for archery has been diluted, as that the self-generated performance anxiety has gone as your self image is no longer wrapped up in archery. I wonder what the horse riding equivalent of target panic is.[/quote] Hi Alan. Great to hear from...

Re: Going Southpaw
I haven't been to the site for a while but good to have just had a catchup. I have shot little of late due to training and riding a horse for endurance competition. Completed a couple of 80km rides, so thick in the hide, but weak in the shooting muscles  . Good to see that others have found...

Re: Osage Orange seeds
Mine are still growing in pots and about two feet high. I was going to plant some of them in the Spring, but didn't because I was worried about drying conditions, but am now kicking myself because we have had rain pretty often this Summer. Your comments re too much water are interesting because Long...

Humble aplogies. I just realised that Hamish was talking about eucalypts, not wattles. My comment re those two wattles still stands however

Re: Selfbow woods New Zealand
I think what Hamish said about wattles is largely true however a couple of guys here in NSW have had really good experiences with Currawang (Acacia doratoxylon) and hickory wattle (Acacia falciformis). Both guys (Pete Rogers re the first and John Deer re the second) are knowledgable craftsmen. I've ...

Re: Yew ELB
No doubt about it, a yew ELB is really something. ELB's are really fun to shoot too. Mine made by Len from Americam Ash is a great bow to shoot.
I'm still intrigued by Kevin's report that the English longbow team shot ELBs in the World 3Di Championships.

Re: Importing or taking a bow with arrows into New Zealand
I had no trouble taking longbow and wooden arrows into NZ. As others have said AQIS and NZ quarantine are more worried about dirt on your arrows, boots etc. From an AQIS and NZ quarantine point of view they usually want you to mention in your declaration that you have wood items, but if they look at...

Re: To cant, or not to cant
Simon, Steve Morley is a Brit. Had problems with GNAS not sending modern longbowers to FITA 3D Worlds as GNAS uses ELBs. Steve had met a lovely Estonian lady, settled down there and set up an archery park there He became their national champion and coach. I spent a fair bit of time talking with Ste...

Re: To cant, or not to cant
In IFAA barebow recurve you are permitted to fit a very small level to your bow. And they call that barebow!  Jeff Terminological problem. What is termed generally thought of as barebow, and is termed barebow in ABA, is termed Bowhunter Recurve or Bowhunter Compound in IFAA. In IFAA b...

I reckon that's a pretty good summary wishsong. Interesting your mention of Steve Morely. He doesan't get a lot of mention in Oz but is a darned good shot. US born but living in Estonia if memory serves me correctly.

Re: To cant, or not to cant
Fair enough comment Jeff:lol: . Under those IFAA rules you are allowed to have a clicker too, but it must be mounted below the arrow. At the IFAA Bowhunter Chamionships last Easter at Wagga I didn't include either the clicker nor the level. Come to think of it you were allowed a stabiliser too which...

Re: To cant, or not to cant
Morning Grahame Yes I figured it came down to distance from the bowhand and while the finer points of physics continue to elude me I can appreciate that the distance of the arrow rest from the bow hand is going to magnify variations from the vertical. In IFAA barebow recurve you are permitted to fit...

Re: To cant, or not to cant
The small change can make quite a difference and that might dependon your set-up. I mentioned earlier that i think I can shoot my selfbow with a cant, where I rest the arrows on the fingers of the bow hand, reasonably well. The other night I was doing some training with my barebow recurve. This has ...

Re: To cant, or not to cant
Hi Dennis Always good to get your comments. I take your point on the need for consistency. Everything one experiences and reads about in archery indicates the wisdom of good form consistently repeated time and time again. Against that as outlined earlier I've been shooting longish target recently wi...

Welcome Matt
It sorta gets hold of you once you get back to it. Good to see more archers in the NSW Southern Tablelands. Sounds like the Goulburn ABA club is starting to expand.

Re: just got my new gamemaster
The people I have seen shooting Gamemasters are all very happy with them. I have a Dorado which is similar and made by Hoyt but doesn't have the loop behind the handle. You have the black riser and maple limbs and personally I really like that. Have to say the handle sems to suit my grip better than...

Re: Split V 3 Under Pros / Cons?
Until late last year I shot the last 4 years with a mediterranean split release. This was with longbows and selfbows. I went back to shooting a recurve late last year and experimented three fingers under. I'd shot quite well that way 5-6 years ago, but found it quite difficult when I went back to it...

Re: Yabusame - Kasagake Festival
watch where you park your horse on the shooting line mate at the clout. The horse would come in handy getting to the clout and back though. Clout shooting from a moving horse would be interesting. I will have my 12th century outfit on including hardware. Kev I take your point. The principal aim for...

Hi Simon. [If you watch a bit more Yabusame they usually shoot from the left to the right. In that clip they are shooting from the right to the left - very rarely seen. Re: Yabusame - Kasagake Festival
Morning Grahame You have to admire the colourful dress, the ceremony that is very much part of the Japanese way of doing things, and good to see the opposite sex equally involved and attractively turned out. I only had time for a quick look but the relative length of the bows was interesting relativ...

Re: To cant, or not to cant
Good Afternoon Grahame I appreciate what you are saying. Re target shooting (as against field and hunting) you and Horace are spot on. At 70 m the margin of error is very much smaller and I'd venture to say that the vast majority of people at that distance shooting target would be shooting with an i...

Hi Simon I actually do have Horace Ford alongside the bed, well his book anyway  . Re: To cant, or not to cant
G'day Simon, I shoot my recurve vertical because it seems to be easier to get good alinment that way which is very important when shooting the curves. But for me longbows and selfbows are canted it's just how they naturaly come to hand. As Jeff said canting a longbow opens your sight window where t...

I'm now canting a fair bit further away from the target and it feels OK. What do you mean by this comment Simon? To cant, or not to cant
My early shooting 7 or so years ago was with a barebow recurve with an elevated rest with an Archery Australia club. You were advised to straighten it if you shot with the bow anyway deviating from the vertical. Later on I shot longbows off the shelf the same way and when shooting self-bows stayed t...

Re: Ozzie Hickory Self Bow
I just saw this. Great looking bow John with lots of character. You are doing some great things with that Hickory wattle. I was impressed the good results you got after steaming the set back to the tips back to the handle level. Something I read in the TBBs made me wonder if that would work, but it ...
