Re: Going Southpaw
I need to correct one thing from my first email. I did a bit of research at lunchtime. It appears that Howard Hill and Fred Bear did switch from right to left, or in Fred's case vv, on occasions but it is not apparent on that search why they did it. TP didn't crack a mention in the references I look...

Re: Going Southpaw
Thanks Kev Sorry about the double vision bit-there's obviously a carry over. Re the lend of the bow that is very generous and I may take you up on that. I do have some self bows that lend themselves OK to this. I do have a stack of left handed arrows  . I must admit of thinking of you when I ar...

Going Southpaw
I have suffered from TP on and off the last 4 years, but mostly on and as a result I've only every now and again shot a competitive round I've ben happy with. I've tried prettywell all, no, probably all, the recommended corrective regimes and could write a small book on the subject. Legend has it th...

Re: Top Hat Points, etc.
Thanks Kev That sounds good. Theat ability to readily swap points for whatever purposes is a significant advantage. I have just rediscovered the joys of stump/grass tuft shooting. It's a heck of a lot of fun in its own right. If I could just hit targets with that degree of success/ frequency...........

Re: Top Hat Points, etc.
Thanks Grahame and Kev I was barking up the wrong tree when Kevin was talking screw on points on another thread the other day; I should have twigged with the word adaptor and now I can see the considerable advantages of the adaptors plus variable point weights re tuning. Are the adaptors standard we...

Re: Carbon or wood to be or not to be that is the question
Hi Kev. Plus there is the excitement of butts that packed for compounds shooting knitting needle thin arrows. Ones wood bounce out. :D .... There is nothing worse  . Your fire your best shot of the day and it strikes dead centre, and the confounded thing bounces out, and the rest of the group...

Re: Carbon or wood to be or not to be that is the question
Thanks Kev I reckon I've got the spine re the wood arrows for the Dorado fairly right because the ABA day when I tried them I shot a 21% better score than I've shot before out of that bow and I'm not aware of changing anything else other than the arrows. Re my comments on playing round with spine, I...

Re: Carbon or wood to be or not to be that is the question
Thanks Kev I really appreciate your comments. Within ABA rules you have to use the same weight points for the competition, but I take your point re AA/FITA field and your comments have initiated some creative thinking there.I have just obtained my first set of screw in points and they will be great ...

Re: Carbon or wood to be or not to be that is the question
First of all a big thanks for Jeff for getting me back into the system  . When I tried to log on two or three days ago I kept getting told I had too many mistakes with my logon and nothing seemed to work. Jeff sorted it out during a close to 30 minute phone conversation this morning. Something ...

Re: Elm sapwood/heartwood question
Thanks Daryl I really appreciate your reference to those sites and the comments. For the last three years I thought a Sudbury design was the way to go. In the Bent Stick Paul Comstock saw it as an overbuilt bow not too far removed from the Meare Heath and a very efficient design. At that time I made...

Re: Elm sapwood/heartwood question
Thanks Hamish and Len Re Hamish's comment one of the editions of the Bowyer's Bible, and I think it was Tim Baker in comparing bow woods, gave elm a really good mention in comparison to other bow woods. Len, I knew that in England they used elm but re it's relation to the making of yew bows hadn't c...

Elm sapwood/heartwood question
Around a year ago we took a limb (roughly 9" in diameter) off an elm at home because the limb was encroaching on a shed roof. I subsequently split the limb into 4 staves. I'm now looking at making a Sudbury type selfbow from the first of the staves. the stave is roughly 2" thick sapwood an...

Re: Recurve bows: Shooting off the shelf vs plunger and rest
There sounds like there's a few tuning bits and pieces going on with your Hoyt Brumbies Country than just which tiller suits Rest or Shelf. Read this Link http://www.bowyersedge.com/organic.html . It is a more though explanation of tiller. I am by no means saying this is whats going on with your Bo...

Re: Recurve bows: Shooting off the shelf vs plunger and rest
It's not simply a matter of choosing to shoot your Bow off the shelf or using a rest/ plunger combination. The tiller of the bow is Vital. Different tiller is required for different releases, ie 3 under or Mediteranian and where the arrow passes in relation to the grip / hand position [ pivot point...

Re: Recurve bows: Shooting off the shelf vs plunger and rest
Hi Simon. You do need feather fletching and no doubt there is an increased friction component and some reduction in arrow speed. A radius shelf would reduce the friction element to some degree. IMHO Whilst I use feathers by choice I believe they are not the only solution. You could use vanes if you...

Re: Recurve bows: Shooting off the shelf vs plunger and rest
Thanks Night Wing I really appreciate the thoroughness of your reply. A chrono comparision of shooting the same equipment off the shelf against plunger and arrow rest would be academically interesting, but I take your point re hunting, ethical need for closeness of shot. and the need for the quietne...

Recurve bows: Shooting off the shelf vs plunger and rest
FITA recurvers finely tune their bows including plungers and arrow rests and there is no doubt that combined with high quality arrows this can lead to very good results. On the other hand I've seen some exceptional shooting of recurves off the shelf recently. When it comes to speed shooting such as ...

Re: Anchor and alignment and form..and still learning
Me too. I've changed my anchor point, but a couple of changes to go along with it. My anchor point has been index finger in contact with the cheek bone, ideally feeling for contact with the third upper molar. thats been in conjunction with a Mediterranean release. Trouble has been a bad tendency for...

Re: Ideal Draw Weight?
This is a good thread Paul. As you have pointed out, if you are no longer hunting anything of size you can drop down a bit. Ditto after injuries and the detrimental effects of aging. I had abdominal surgery late November and prior to that had been shooting 40-47lb selfbows ( mostly around 45lb) for ...

Re: Arrow speed feather fletches vs plastic vanes
Hi Simon, feathers are lighter but apparently have a bit more drag when comparing the same size, offset or helical. I think it would be much of a muchness but would have thought the feathers would lose out in long range comparisons. Lauren Van Cleeve didn't strike me as a greatly consistent shooter...

Re: Hoyt Dorado
Thanks Troy Yeah weight is a factor in my case, I weighed my Samick target recurve last night and with a small AA/FITA allowed weight attached front of riser it came in exactly the same weight as advertised weight of the Dorado. I really like the Buffalo but I also like the option provided by the Do...

Arrow speed feather fletches vs plastic vanes
I was looking at a Masters of the Barebow DVD last night and came across something I hadn't expected but may well be known by everybody else. It concerned Lauran van Cleeve and the clip was primarily about face walking but at one point he was saying the Florida climate dictates that he occasionally ...
