Re: Big Game Hunting Poundages ???

Yes Glenn,
In regards to heavy FOC I was using @ 280 grains up front - a ground down 190 grain Grizzly and a 125 grains steel broadhead adaptor. Worked a treat. Thanks guys. Howie

Re: Big Game Hunting Poundages ???

It has been mentioned b4, when a bull is staring you down from close range, raking the ground with his hooves, whacking trees with his horns and staring thru you, you start to think is this bow and arrow good enough to do the job. I hope everyone has the opportunity to hunt buffalo - its a rush. Aft...

Re: Big Game Hunting Poundages ???

As stated, my limited experience with these animals have proved to me that there appears to be no point in using extremely heavy arrows but a good compromise between bow weight and arrow weight. Previously to this past trip, I was an advocate of heavy arrows, but after the results of this trip, I am...

Re: Big Game Hunting Poundages ???

Some interesting results to report. It was noted that some thought that a heavier arrow, in their opinion, will always penetrate better all else being equal. Well I have just returned from my third trip the Northern Territory. Ist and 2nd trips I used 800 and 900 grain arrows and had great arrow pen...

Re: Big Game Hunting Poundages ???

Clinton, copy that and I have always believed a heavier arrow to out penetrate a lighter faster traveling arrow, thats why my arrows were 800 and 900 grains. I have also heard that an arrow has a optimum weight when fired from a certain weight bow, so by increasing the arrow weight, (to a point) you...

Re: Big Game Hunting Poundages ???

There are a couple of brothers who have taken big numbers of bulls and they use 75 to 80 # compounds, 500 to 600 grain arrows and they do get pass thru's. They have hunted bulls for over a decade and thats what they use. Cant argue with that type of success and proves that heavy arrows are not neces...

Re: Big Game Hunting Poundages ???

Lindsay. I was shooting my Hoyt last week and used a 580 grain and a 860 grain field tipped arrow into my target, it revealed that the 580 continually penetrated further into the target. I am leaning towards a heavier bow poundage instead of a heavier arrow. Looking at what the equation is for kinet...

Re: Big Game Hunting Poundages ???

Again, not trad - but good and thought provoking info. Some info regarding the lighter compound bow - 60# Alpine single cam at @28 inch draw, shooting the fatter alloy arrows, 23/17's and 22/19's and the long Davies head. Arrow weight 700 grains. The shot was 20 - 22 yards, bull standing broadside, ...

Re: Big Game Hunting Poundages ???

Although I am a compound bowhunter, I hope the following might be of some interest to the readers. In the last 2 years I have been fortunate to kill 7 bulls and 2 cows and seen another 5 bulls taken with the bow. The vast majority of those animals were taken with 80# compounds using arrows in the 75...
