I make some knives and the Fallkniven F1 is one of the few knives that I would purchase, in fact I did (at a good price).

The company who works out a good "flame job" with either Micarta or G-10 is going to make a mint.

Old ones are supposed to be 1095.
Australian Whiltshire files are supposed to be 1095 or W2.
Best advice - Buy a piece of steel and use the file to make the knife.

There might be one guy in Australia (I know about) trying it.
I have been told that a lot of Australian wood is dense and it might be a problem to get the compound into the wood, but I have not worried with it.

Love your work Stewart. Thankyou. Do you do any leatherwork to compliment these knives? Yes, there might be photos below my signature block, they should show some knives with sheaths. I haven't made any "distinctive" Puuko sheaths yet. Ray Mears I just pick up the shows on Foxtell, BBC2??...

The ones I have pulled apart and the information from some books on how to make one indicates the following: Both the liners on the inside are (can't think the right term) "drilled" with a bigger drill bit to the half (ish) of the liner depth. The pins are then piened (?) so they won't com...

Re: First Knife
IMO I would take the handle off it. Drill a number of holes in the tang, it will help with the weight. Take the edge off it. Send it to Hills and get it heat treated professionally ( Not more than $14.00 + reply postage) Wait for 2 weeks for it to come back. Put the handle on again. Sharpen it . And...

Re: Have to anneal Files?
Someone told me do not use sand it might turn into glass and it is a shocker to grind then. You can probably anneal it by putting it into a hot fire. Not 100% sure but I think files are harder (as in higher Rockwell) than a knife. So you can get a fire to anneal it and then grind/file/drill t...

as long as it can hold an edge longer than 440c stainless steel. Edge retention and durability is the prioraty. Interesting that some of the knives I made for the kitchen and "my shed knife" are made of 440C. I have had no problems with 440C. I have factory 440A and 440B knives have been ...

Re: Knife steel-D2
Jape, What you are saying is correct. My belief is that a lot of guys want to make a knife. One problem is they don't have much equipment and tools. Certainly I didn't have many when I started (I am not a tradie). IMO the $40 (ish) for a piece of "known steel" is a bargain. $15 (ish) to ge...

All the grinds have good points. But the heat treatment and the thickness of the steel has to be taken into the eqaution as well.
