Re: Homemade archery netting
FYI 3 layers of loosely hanging shadecloth was no match for my 30lb recurve and aluminium arrows. So back to the drawing board. I do have heaps of carpet, but the light poles I'm using won't support it. Might be good for other more permanent sites though. Next attempt will be to use some leftover we...

Re: Homemade archery netting
Thanks everyone. My little man's name is Aiden. So far big sister likes him because he can't yet reach out and grab anything she's playing with :D The idea of this arrow netting is to be transportable in the back of my Astra hatch with the back seats down, along with the frame, and of course all my ...

Homemade archery netting
Hi gang Long time no visit. This happened! chubby smiles.jpg Anyway, I'm trying to make a DIY archery backstop netting to catch stray arrows. We mostly use 23-35lb bows and 5/16th wooden arrows, so nothing too hardcore. The netting is not a failsafe, more a time saver. if it catches 50% of stray arr...

Re: Roving Mark the greatest form of archery comp ?
I agree Len, personally to me this is the ultimate form of "war target" archery :D Can you hit a body of men at an unknown distance? Plus I just love seeing an arrow arcing in flight, it's satisfying in a way that shooting flatter at a closer bullseye just can't satisfy for me. If given th...

Bow poundage scales for tillering - 8 Nov 2010 only
This site has one day only deals, all sorts of things big and small, cheap and expensive. Today in their "small fry" section I noticed they have a luggage weighing scale that goes up to 32kgs / 70 pounds, for only $10 plus shipping. http://www.catchoftheday.com.au/smallfish_info.php?produc...

Re: Medicinebowwoods.com - any experience?
And I'm guessing that the heartwood and sapwood are of high quality for warbow use?
My bowmaking friend ordered yew billets from somewhere (mnot sure where, will find out) and the guy had hacked off huge chunks of the sapwood with his draw knife on some, leaving it too thin in places.

Medicinebowwoods.com - any experience?
HI everyone My bowmaking friend in Perth said that someone at the recent Sticke & Stringe event managed to find a seller from the US who sent him a 72 inch yew stave, shipped to Australia for USD$150 total. I'm trying to find out who it was, if I do I'll let you all know. In the meantime, I emai...

Whereabouts in Perth are you? There are several clubs around the place.

Greybeard thankyou so much for these photos, I'm a really visual person so seeing those pics now gives me a guide to use :D My local Carbatec sells American ash so I'll try and find a suitable piece and attempt my first non-bamboo bow! Re: Help - posting board bows across Australia
Thanks for that, I've sent them an enquiry email. The trick is to find the right timber, at a place that lets you sift through their stacks of boards. So far I've only found retail outlets who don't want me going through their stock to only then pick a few pieces. I guess they don't care about one g...

Re: Postage for a longbow from the US
That reminds me, wen I was in Americathe local USPS office in Maine allowed all of us camp staff to ship boxes back to Australia and around the world for a cheaper rate than normal, because they made so much money on volume of boxes sent. They were willing to bend the rules on box sizes. And once it...

Help - posting board bows across Australia

Re: Postage for a longbow from the US
Heck, even if we can find exactly what postage company and style etc was used for that cheap a price, we can tell other bow makers to use that specific option! There are so many overseas makers who sell cheap "finish yourself" bows, but the postage is a real killer.

Labor has ballsed up many things while in government. Krudd proved to be mostly talk and little action. Gillard is new and unproven but was part of that woeful administration. Abbott is a 1950's throwback who would keep us lagging way behind in technology (I work in IT and live on the net, and have ...

How much was the bow itself if you don't mind me asking? Was it a "you finish" bow or a completed, ready to shoot bow?

Re: Kevin's Bowmaking Video
Thanks Daryl. I did try that basic philosophy, but don't think I made the fabric wet enough with enough glue, so although it's held nicely, being quite thick fabric, it didn't soak through all the way. So I kind of had a glued underside of linen with a soft fluffy top half. It made accurate cutting ...

Re: Kevin's Bowmaking Video
With the linen backing, I found it initially hard to cut it to size accurately as of course it kind of "fluffs up" when you cut the fabric. I ended up trimming it as best I could very slowly with a surgical scalpel, then after I applied 2 coats of clear matt Estapol varnish, the fabric bec...

Re: Kevin's Bowmaking Video
Just the victorian one is backed with linen, I glued it on with the bow held in about 3-4 inches of reflex. The brown flatbow is unbacked. I've put a fair few arrows through both now and they're holding up okay. Next project is a < 30lb vic longbow for myself for my archery games. I'll make one with...
