Re: Maple
The following refers to milled boards and not split bush billits. You will probably find that the buloke will crush the softer belly timber. Properties of buloke are shown in the following link. https://www.wood-database.com/australian-buloke/ I would suggest a bend through the handle design as you ...

Re: American Semi Longbow (ASL)
Jeff, I only ever used a back quiver when in the bush but for some years now I have used a hip quiver when walking the archery ranges. A bow quiver may have some benefits when ambushing game from a hide or tree stands as opposed to tracking game on the ground. Some of the archers in the video appear...

I wonder how durable these vanes are. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoyYbqNLCSg ”Traditionally, feathers of monal pheasants are used in arrows as fletchings. Re: Manchu Bows.
Jeff, From some of the videos I have watched standing along the shooting lane seems to be a common practice with Mongolian and Turkish traditional archery. The Bhutanese stand close to the target and do a little dance after the archer looses an arrow. I was surprised that the 82# Manchu bow outperfo...

I have been watching some videos on traditional bow making by Stiliyan Stefanov. The quality of his work is quite amazing when you consider the result that is achieved using basic tools. Although the event was held a few years back I recently found this video whilst researching static tip bows.
Be it good management, good luck or a combination of both it is quite an incredible result.

I didn’t know until recently that Ben Pearson made Hill’s bamboo bows for the retail archery market. * Howard Hill_Ben Pearson 1941.jpg * The vulcanised fibre backing was probably the forerunner to fibreglass. https://www.polymerplastics.com/composite_vulcan.shtml It would appear that they were a re...

Unfortunately I was unable to get a photo of the bow at full draw [living by myself] and at the time it did not occur to me to take a photo of it at full draw on the tiller board.
As for braced I don’t think the brain was in gear at the time.

Blackheart Sassafras & River Gum
I had a request to make an Asiatic static tip bow. The recipient is very happy with the finished bow, particularly the timber tone combination. The bleached bamboo back and carbonised bamboo belly are under clear glass. River gum was used in the handle. Because of the softer nature of the sassafras ...

BEWARE; Cheap Chinese Made Bamboo Arrows.
I wanted some bamboo arrows to use with my Asiatic style bows. At $49.00 per dozen after discount and delivered to my door I thought it worth the risk. If your draw length is around 30” and you want to shoot a longbow I agree with Jeff. A 70” n to n bow is probably the better option but your choices maybe limited with an ‘off the shelf’ bow. To ascertain if and when your bow goes into stack build a jig as shown in the image. * String To Tip Angle.j...

Hi QIMB, Perhaps you could try to source some of the following timber. You may have to check out wooden boat builders and I believe picture frame manufacturers also use straight grained knot free Huon pine. Daryl. https://www.wood-database.com/huon-pine/ https://www.wood-database.com/douglas-fir/

Angus,
I was fortunate to get a good pole from my local Bunning’s store. I was told the stores have a certain amount of autonomy as to the depth of products they stock.
I was able to get six strips out of this 10 cm pole using my cordless circular saw.

Hi Angus, String follow / set is inevitable with selfbows. Steps such as pulling the limbs into reflex using heat can help minimise the amount of set. I prefer to use wet heat [steam] rather than a heat gun. http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php?topic=33079.0 https://www.tradgang.com/tgsmf/in...

After watching several videos on making a dust collector with hit and miss results I thought paying $34.00 for a commercially made one a bargain.
