Hi Sabinus,
count me in with the masses then - I love the look of the winged riser! That is what self bowyery is all about - self expression. Although no expert, it also looks to me like a very capable bow. Good on you!

Those photos above really capture the spirit of the shoot perfectly - perfect weather, great company, fantastic surrounds and a beer around a campfire after a day's shooting! Big thanks to all at Barambah for looking after us so well and showing us a great time. See you next year!

I'll second all that you said Temudjin! I was another of the budding bowyers at the second workshop and owe Perry and Glen a huge thank you for their time and patience over the weekend. It was a great experience and a lot was learned in a short time that will hopefully be remembered and used for yea...

Possible spam/virus??
Hi Ozbow, I just want to query a private message I got that I suspect is either spam or a virus. I got the following email in my regular email inbox telling me that I have a new private message in Ozbow. Hello Forester, You have received a new private message from "Billybof" to your accoun...

Re: Granite Belt Bowmen Trad shoot Mar 4/5 2017
Hi all, just want to add my voice to the chorus of thanks following the Stanthorpe trad shoot on the weekend. For those that haven't shot there before, it is an amazing course - a bit steep in places but the view at the top is worth every puff! The target placement was carefully thought out and resu...

Re: Sunnie Coast trad
Just want to add my thanks to the Sunny Coast Bowmen - it was a really great day, fantastic location, challenging targets and a friendly bunch of people to shoot with. The duelling tower was a great idea I had never seen before, a good way to have a fun mini competition with another archer. Big than...

Re: Red oak riser question
I'm glad you raised that point Rob, as I have recently came across a few posts on other forums that said the same thing for a similar problem and I was wondering if that would work here. Colin - back to what you were saying before about it being shear stresses and not bend that makes handles pop off...

Re: Red oak riser question
Hi there Perry, it was good to meet you as well and put a face to the many posts of yours that I have read! Thanks also for your input, I like your approach of seeing what best suits the piece of wood, rather than forcing pre-formed ideas onto a potentially unsuitable stave - a sure recipe for disas...

Re: Red oak riser question
Great explanation, thanks Colin. What I hadn't appreciated before was the two different kinds of stress - I was only thinking of bending stress and it didn't occur to me that shearing stress would be at work even with absolutely no bend in the handle. I will make those fades as smooth as I can and w...

Re: Red oak riser question
Thanks very much for the input fellas. That 20# at 7 inches is from straight, so it is good to hear that it seems like I do have some thickness to play with yet ("a tonne of wood" sounds very encouraging, Colin!) I have not used red oak before, but perhaps this means I also have a moderate...

Red oak riser question
Hi folks, I have a question that I am hoping to get some feedback on from the seasoned bowyers out there. I have started a red oak board bow and have shaped it out and glued on the riser, but after chatting to Perry at the Jules Trad Shoot it seems I have made a big mistake. My board is only about 1...

Re: Jules Shield Trad Shoot 16/17 July
I'll second that Perry, it was a great shoot! Great spot with all the water around to keep it interesting, and some nice targets. I chickened out of camping as it was a bit miserable from mid afternoon on, but came back on the Sunday to magic weather. A big thanks to the Lakeside Bowmen for hosting ...

Re: Bamboo on bamboo
I reckon that is great Bormin. It looks really good and shoots well, and considering your goal was to make an experimental bow with materials you had to hand, I would say that even if the tiller is not as ideal as you planned, it is still a complete success. Good on you!

Great job on the bow! I have just found a patch of really big bamboo in my local reserve that I would love to try something similar with when I get the chance. What are your limb dimensions, if you don't mind me asking?

Viewing order of topics
Hi, for some reason I cant seem to get the topics to order from the most recent to the oldest. At the moment, when I look at each category, the topics seem to be arranged relatively randomly, not according to the date of the original post, or the date of the last post. This means I have to trawl thr...

Re: Twisted bow while heat treating..
 It had a roughly elliptical cross-section - with a sort of slightly rounded belly. The back was just the underneath of the bark, and I had worked down the belly. No pics unfortunately - I was planning on posting a couple after it was finished... Good point though - next time I will take so...

Twisted bow while heat treating..
Damn, just stuffed up a privet longbow I had nearly finished by twisting it while heat treating the belly…. It was nearly finished but was taking a bit of set so I thought I would bend a bit of reflex into it by heat treating the belly while reverse stringing it. The bending seemed to work a treat, ...

Re: Chinese Elm goes ok!
Thanks for the clarification Colin. Good on you for getting a decent bow out of it, but it sounds like this wood makes worse bows than other woods - and given that I probably make worse bows than other blokes, it is probably a bad combination and I should avoid it  . Thanks for the tip abou...

Re: Chinese Elm goes ok!
Hi Colin - very interesting reading about your good experience with Chinese Elm. I have heaps of it on my place, including some nice straight bits, but I have not bothered to try and make anything out of it before because it rots so quickly on the ground. Just thought that meant it would be too weak...

Re: Barbour's 35/3 linen thread bow string material?
Hi Perry, really interesting post. When I was in Germany a few years ago I built myself an Ash longbow and made a linen string for it based on Tim Baker’s article in the TBB. The string was pretty basic - just an endless loop, with whipping around one end to make a permanent loop and the other end l...

Homemade quiver
Hi all - here are a few photos of a quiver I made recently. The leather is from an old bag that I was given ages ago, and the buckle was salvaged from a broken halter. I have left the strap fairly long and put the buckle in so I can leave it long and wear it over my left shoulder at my right hip, or...

G'day from a newbie
Hi guys - just joined the site and thought I would say g’day and introduce myself. I am pretty new to archery and love it all - actually shooting a bow and making my own gear. After reading the TBB books and finding some of the American forums like paleoplanet, it is great to find a like-minded grou...
