Re: board bows and grain orientation
I'm not an expert but out of the 20-30 board bows Ive made, I tend to follow the grain where I can, I find that if the grain is running off the bow at an angle they will eventually let go in that spot.
Board bows lend themselves to be backed or laminated imo.

Hi Bill, I'm not sure on the dates you are after but the later copies of "The Australian Archery Journal" were also edited by Mark and Karen and I believe that this publication was actually renamed "The Australian bowhunter" from memory this occurred in 1996 but it could have bee...

Any sane person would assume that the ABA would have been all over this years ago by allocating minimum hunting draw weights and acceptable broadheads and arrow weights for all states.

Here it is, buffalo with a 40# curve, I have concerns about this and reservations of the legitimacy of this story. If you feel the urge to hunt buff with a 40# bow it may be time to start working out those chicken wings. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=2497443346961962&substory_index...

Re: Bow Draw Weights for Hunting in Australian States
Qld has never had any minimum requirements, in the past when ppl have asked they get directed to the Vic requirements. Me personally, I have no urge to hunt with a Trad bow under 50# but prefer 55# as minimum hunting bow poundage. There was a bloke recently thats been posting pics online of a few bu...

Re: A matter of choice
....man shoots recurve barebow. Likes friends compound which shoots faster and flatter, and purchases one. Shoots it barebow with fingers (as everyone did then for ABA) and is happy. Gives away archery for a goodly period of time. Decades later wants to get into archery again and buys modern compou...

Re: TAA Proposed Equipment Guidelines 2020
I've wanted to be involved in Trad comps since I was 12 I'm now 40 and still haven't been to one because of the way it is structured and divided and it's an absolute shame. I've owned almost all styles of traditional gear at some point, it's very apparent to me that with practice anyone can become p...

This is almost an identical scenario that got crossbows banned in NSW, might be some repercussions for the Qld archery community from this one.

Re: Backing materials.
Thanks again for your input Daryl, nah mate I'm not chasing performance but a more stable, longer lived self bow.
For some reason, I had in my head that it would be thin like snakeskin? Hopefully it's not overly thick as it would probably rob me of arrow speed.

Re: Backing materials.
So I've found something that I think is definitely worth trying out and that's eel skin (poor man's snakeskin?) Apparently it's 150 times stronger than cow leather of the same thickness, eels are easy to come by and legal, they seem to be the right shape= long, and I can dry it myself and use the th...

I've used imported/bought snakeskins before with a fair amount of success, just wondering what other materials Trad folk have used and how you have gone about attaching it.

I shot gloves exclusively for almost 20 years and it seems that I was either wearing them in or wearing them out, with a small window of how I wanted it. I eventually swapped over to a tab (not willingly mind you) and found that a well made tab has more stable lifespan and has been a consistent shoo...

Thanks very much for the input gentlemen, the shafts I'm working on are busted shafts that I've footed with bunnings tassie oak. OK so I managed to get 10 shafts between 344gn and 373gn and within 8 pounds of each other today and I gave away another dozen that ended up being way too stiff for me to ...

Re: Qld's Red deer, lean times ahead.
Hi Jim, a similar post has made its way around and Ive had quite a few replies, calls and messages with similar reports of numbers dropping off from elsewhere in Qld and quite a bit in NSW from just over the border through to the blue mountains, mostly fallow and reds. I do know of one guy and his b...
