Re: Laying out perfect helical fletching with just a texta.
That's a great idea, Duncan. Welcome to the forum mate. I used to do the same, only I just drew a straight line and used a pin, to hold the front of the flight, to one side of the line and pinned the rear of the feather, to the other side of the line. That method was quicker than using a fle...

Re: Finished Woomera longbow and some tackle.
Well, I've been shooting the Woomera for a couple of weeks now and getting used to it. The home made dowel arrows, are standing up to the shooting and three of them have been fired about 100 times each. The only damage has been a loose fletch and a piece broken out of a feather . I made some 135g fi...

Re: Finished Woomera longbow and some tackle.
I like the Quiver but I would suggest that you slide the two pieces to the inside of the fades so they don't interfear with the limbs  Thanks LB  How would it affect the action of the limbs, being so close to the fadeout? It would be difficult to get them to stay in place, mounted furt...

Re: Finished Woomera longbow and some tackle.
Jeff has already mentioned the the fades , but let me add my congratulations on your arrow making particularly the self nocks, and your tool making . Pleasure to see it posted . good work. Thanks bigbob  Toolmaking is the trade I was in, before taking up gunsmithing. Did you make those two l...

Re: Finished Woomera longbow and some tackle.
Thanks Jeff. I did notice that little step in the 'fadeout' and didn't know what I was looking at. I did wonder about it being a stress point, but we'll see. So far so good. Did you make those two longbows? They are beautiful. I know that Tas Oak is a generic term and the wood that I got is pr...

Re: Finished Woomera longbow and some tackle.
Thank you bigbob and Jeff. I'm new to this business, so, what is a fadeout and should the handle be thinner than the limbs? I followed Johns directions and cut the arrow shelf in 9mm. I didn't want to thin the handle too much, in case I weakened the riser. With the leather grip it fills my h...

Finished Woomera longbow and some tackle.
G'day fellas, I recently purchased the last Permex longbow blank from John Clark at Ausbow Ind. It arrived with his book on building and finishing longbows. Thanks John. Over the holiday break, I finished it off and made a Flemish twist string for it. It's lovely and smooth to draw and I'm getting i...

Thank you GrahameA. That's useful information.
I have since bought a Woomera longbow blank and am playing with that now.
I'll post some pics and story on it soon.
Cheers.

Well, Hamish and Mick guessed correctly and it failed at one of the nodes. I'll put backing on the next one, but it's on to better and longer things

Re: Bamboo flat bow
I just had a look at that Brigalow bow. Looks good. I saw a really nice one, maybe on another site, when I was trolling for ideas. I did a bit more on the Flatbow this arvo. It needs a bit more thinning, in the middle of the upper limb. On the left of pic. I think the string length is going to be 51...

Re: Bamboo flat bow
Thanks for all the suggestions. I know it's on the short side, for me, but I do have grandkids and one of them might like a light bow to learn on. I do have longer pieces, but was going to leave them for now. What I want to do next is, build a selfbow from Brigalow wood and that is the reason for th...

Bamboo flat bow
G'day folks, Here are some pics of my first proper bow build. Although, as kids, we made bows from tree branches and strung them with string and shot arrows made from whatever we could find. We recently had a new Bamboo floor fitted to our living area and there were leftovers and I loooove leftovers...

Hi Afro and welcome to the site. You should fit in very well with your interests. I would be interested to see the bow you're making, if you get the time to take a photo or two. To my knowledge, we have a few members who have a lot of experience with firearms, as well. Thanks Mick  I will po...

G'day from Armidale.
Hello everyone  I thought I would join this forum, as it looks good, the articles are well written and you all seem like a good bunch of fellas. I have only done a bit of archery but want to do more. I like plain bows and wood arrows. I have a RH Whagok recurve, #65 @ 28", but I'm having...
