Re: Bamboo Backed Rock Maple Bow

So this is where it sits. First image is on the tree at rest. The tips are covered with leather pockets as no sting grooves are filed in yet. You can see it retained a fair amount of reflex. IMG_7270.jpg Next pic shows it at 40# on the long string. Note intended draw weight about 45# but not too con...

Re: Bamboo Backed Rock Maple Bow

Time for an update. I glued the handle timbers together first and then glued those to the main board. I did this before gluing on the bamboo as with the introduction of the reflex I'd be trying to pull the ends of the handle sections onto the board for gluing rather than pushing it all together. I t...

A very interesting bow Daryl, I like it. Removing wood from that and keeping it true to the cross section along the entire length would indeed be a challenge so well done. I'd love to see a photo of it at full draw.

Re: Bamboo Backed Rock Maple Bow

Gents, thank you for your feedback. I had a follow up "consult" with Greybeard and on his advice will reduce the width of the bow and bamboo so that the crown on the bamboo and its resulting effect on the maple is reduced. I've also looked again at Daryl's build here; https://ozbow.net/php...

Re: Bamboo Backed Rock Maple Bow

So I've moved past analysis paralysis and have now cut the rock maple into 12mm thick pieces. There are a few little pin knots in it which weren't visible earlier. One of the boards could only be maxxed out to 1580mm long so will yield a bow of about 60" NTN. The other will get about 62" N...

Thanks for that link Daryl, indeed interesting. Hope I'll get a bit of a run at it soon. This Carona Virus has just cancelled the bulk of my weekend sporting commitments which certainly helps. :D

Re: Bamboo Backed R-D Bow Questions.

Hi Daryl, Thanks for your input. I'll indeed use the Z style splice for joining. What you say regarding incorporating deflex makes sense so why is the deflex reflex so popular? I thought it gave the bow better manners - not sure how though. Mind you there's a lot of recurves out there sporting a lot...

Re: Bamboo Backed R-D Bow Questions.

Thanks Jeff. I know technically it is indeed a deflex reflex design but so few people call it that as saying it in reverse rolls off the tongue better. But yes deflex through the handle and reflex towards the tips.

Bamboo Backed Rock Maple Bow

Hi All, been a while. I'm wanting to make up a few bows for myself and my kids. I've had a go at using red oak backed with linen and made a few bits of kindling instead. I'm still keen so will keep going. Style of bow I'm looking at is a bamboo backed board bow glued into a reflex deflex p...

He's keen that's for sure and some great stuff there. Wish I had that much spare time. Today I spent putting in my 240V wiring for the house extension. I'd say some of my work is pretty primitive.

Re: Quality 2 Pack Epoxy Glues Are Cost Effective

Hi Daryl. Question re' the number of bows you will get out of Smooth-On. I bought the 1 pint package (2 tins totalling 1 pint) for $55 from John and his feedback was that this would yield around 6 bows. So around $9 per bow which I still didn't think was too bad. What's your thoughts on how many bow...

Re: Selecting Timber for a Greenland Kayak

Hey Daryl, the frame, therefore the hull, should be rigid. No doubt there'll be a bit of localised flex but on the whole the more rigid the better. I would have thought that dry heating would just make the timber harder? I spoke to Michael from Watt's Woods today, very helpful bloke. Seems like ther...

Re: Selecting Timber for a Greenland Kayak

So I've read the section re' bending the ribs in detail. The ribs are pre-prepared including being cut to length and thinning and then steamed a few at a time. The end of the steamed rib is then put in a jig and bent more to break the grain than to a definite shape. While it is still hot the ends ar...

Re: Selecting Timber for a Greenland Kayak

Hi Daryl, yes essentially that's the structure I will be using. The method described in the book includes cutting all of the ribs to length, steaming and then shaping over a form. So as long as the form is accurate it should work out okay. The steaming method sounds like it does not include too much...

Daryl, as a former student of structural engineering (only made it through to end of second year) I remember well the Area Moment of Inertia formula of b x d cubed/12. Re: 1hr Cypress Boardbow

Impressive result for an hour of work, well done. So if you make the next one around 3" wide at the fades it would come in around 45#? Would you trust it at 68NTN to up that poundage a little?

Re: Red Oak Board Bow Layout.

Thanks guys. I was thinking 3" shorter was maybe a bit too short, just means I need to add another nail to the jig. ;) Simple enough. I just measured my tillering string and it's at 47" which gives only about 1 1/2" brace. So 46" seems about right. Might err a touch on the long s...

Hey guys. Trying to get back to this after Christmas etc. Received my string material and have just made up a jig. The small bow is 48" ntn and wondering what length to make the string. I'm guessing the brace height would be around 4" from the back and the string 45" long. If someone ...

Not quite the type of drag system you usually find on a fishing reel, but sounds very effective.

At 2m with that harpoon I suspect it will be a pretty quick fight. A vid' would be awesome.
