Re: cheap doesn't have to be nasty!

 That really is a nice looking bow bigbob. Can I ask how you finish your riser, is it with an oil or wax?

Just love the finish...

Re: First Red Oak Longbow Kaput...

Guys I backed by red oak bow with Jute, however run off wasn't my issue, it was bad tillering. The again I am not sure Red Oak is that good after all. I made 2 other bows around Xmas. Once a 35# and the other about 50# - the 30# bow came up ok, but the tillering could have been a little better, but ...

Re: First Red Oak Longbow Kaput...

Tom it was my first red oak bow. I bought the timber board from Masters Hardware here in Sydney - the length of the finished bow was 72 inches (tip to tip), and about 50# @ 28". I was drawing about 30inches, so I was probably pulling about 55-56# I guess, maybe a little less. The look and feel ...

First Red Oak Longbow Kaput...

I thought I'd share these photos with you after my first red oak bow snapped today. I knew it was coming after discovering crysals/frets a few months ago. On reflection the crysals problem was a result of bad tillering - when I finished the bow last year, right at the end of the build I noticed a sl...

Re: Best longbow to buy....?

Thank you Woodie and all of you for your helpful advice. Sounds like I might be heading up to Wisemans Ferry for a look see. I must say I think I'll be going for a traditional straight laid glass laminated longbow, with Aussie timber.

Re: Best longbow to buy....?

Thanks guys, that is really helpful. Yes LB Rod 55 I definitely want an Aussie made bow, I know it will be built properly! Did I interpret Nephew's post correctly in that you are the maker of Gringa Bows? I had a quick look on facebook and liked what I saw, very nice - can I ask where you are based?...

Best longbow to buy....?

Thinking about having a laminated longbow made, but I just don't who is the best person to talk to. I have read a little about Norseman and Razor, but wanted to see what people think?

Who is known for making strong, durable bows here in Australia ?

Toby I need a back quiver also. Can you tell me who makes the first quiver on your post, the one with the full lip as opposed to the cut out rim?

What is the best target butt material?

I just started getting back into archery and recently made a red oak bow. Been using sugar cane mulch in plastic bags (landscaping mulch), however they aren't the best.

What are people commonly using for target butts?

Re: Chrysals or filing marks, Red Oak Bow Build..

Thanks again Yeoman. I actually did do hat you suggested in regard to mime rasping and it was exactly the same angle. The marks didn't protrude, so maybe they are file marks ? The bows are in Victoria now (I am in NSW), so I probably won't see then for a while, but I'll ask my nephews how it is goin...

Re: Chrysals or filing marks, Red Oak Bow Build..

Sorry in regard to the other question about the direction of the marks, they are diagonal across the grain, not horizontally across the grain, but at an angle and that is why I thought they may still be file marks as I used a rough rasp at an angle during the tillering process. I wish I could take a...

Re: Chrysals or filing marks, Red Oak Bow Build..

 Thanks again Yeoman for your help. I could take a photo but they are actually quite hard to see, but they looked like indentations, but then again that was unstressed. I have made 3 red oak bows now and 2 seemed to have developed these frets. Unstrung this bow had the least set of the late...

Chrysals or filing marks, Red Oak Bow Build..

Just thought I'd attach some photos of 2 new red oak bows I made for my nephews for Xmas this year. Both came up pretty well, except during the tillering process i cut too much weight off one bow. I did have a question for you more experienced Boyers. On the heavier bow (about 50#), I noticed some d...

Re: Red Oak Flat bow

Thanks greybeard, I thought that might be the case. In my first bow, I knew had a slight hinge, but only realised it after I started varnishing it, so kept going thinking it might be ok - sounds like it is going to snap at some stage. I'll just have to be careful with these next two bows... Good til...

Re: Red Oak Flat bow

I am actually in the process of building two matching red oak flat bows for my nephews (Xmas presents). These are my 2nd attempt at building self bows. My first looked the part but developed Chrysals/ frets. The area on the limb where it appears looks to be where a hinge is. I didn't tiller the firs...

Red Oak Recurve Bow

ok, completed the first red oak longbow (flat bow) and am pondering about the next project. I was thinking about another flat bow, but backing it with Hickory, but then I thought it might be cool to try a make a full wood recurve. I read with some interest punters in the US successfully making red o...

Crazy idea..Backing a Red Oak Bow with Red Oak?

I know this might not make sense, but that is the reason for this post. I want to make a Red Oak bow, but I'd prefer to retain the timber look and feel on the back of the bow, rather than using another material. Here's the question, would it make sense to actually back a Red Oak bow with a 1/8 thin ...
