Re: Blackheart Sassafras & River Gum
I would like to see a strung photo too. I love blackheart sassafras. The bow has a very subtle tone to it. The wood combination works very well. Very nice.

Utility Knife
I have just finished making this knife . It is full tang and the design is based off a Leuku. I made it from a 5mm circular sawblade and heat treated to 59-60rc. After a bit of experimenting I reckon I've nailed the heat treat for a good balance of edge retention and toughness. The blade has been fl...

Re: Leuku knife
Finished the sheath yesterday . I tried to keep everything in the same theme and not stray too far from what would be a traditional Leuku. I think it all turned out ok.

Never thought much of Leukus in the past but lately they fascinate me with their utilitarian purpose. Feedback and thoughts appreciated.

New knives
I finally made myself a kitchen knife. It's kind of an all round utility knife and basically an up scaled version of the small hunter that I make. Should work well. The other one is one I made for a mate. He wanted an Ontario rat 7 copy but longer and wider. It's 7mm thick 5160 . Very stout. Thanks ...

Re: Osage / 15n20
A mate gave me some solvent based polymer wood stabilizer that he used when he had a furniture business. It's supposed to stop the ultra violet from changing the colour of wood. I think it's inevitable that the Osage will turn brown though.

Re: Osage / 15n20
It is a shame about going brown . I did UV treat it before oiling it I'll see how that goes.

Just finished this one. I do like Osage and 15n20 combination. My phone camera doesn't take the best photos . Hope you like.

Re: 1084 Hunter
Thanks. The photos are very deceiving. Definitely looks better in real life. In the photo it looks like the handle has splits but its the grain and finish has a real 3D effect. The blade has a scotch brite belt finish that is super quick and easy to do and gives a good working knife finish.

1084 Hunter
I just finished this hunter in 1084 with a grey ironbark handle. I made the sheath too. This was the first leather work I've ever done and its not pretty but works. I really like the combination of steel and timber in this and plan to make some more.

I finished this last night and it's getting picked up in the morning to be given as a Christmas present. Not exactly what I'm into but I was talked into making it. More like begged. It was a heat treat challenge just because it's too big to fit into anything I own so I had to do some modification to...

Re: Meat Cleaver
I made it from a 5mm thick circular sawmill blade I picked up the other day. Hugh blade 1500mm diameter. I'm not sure what steel it but the first test piece did harden well with fine grain structure. They say you shouldn't use mystery steel but you can make a decent knife and I think it's fun and in...

I've wondered the same thing. I looked into it a while ago and it compared closely to Osage from memory. You can pick it up cheap too. I plan on trying it. Not in a selfbow but in a laminatd bow.

Re: Osage camp knife
Thanks mate. I showed this knife to a work mate , he took it off me asked how much then handed me some cash. I didn't get to touch it again. He is a knife collector so I was pretty happy with myself.

I learned a few things with this one. Convex sabre grinds are harder to do than I thought. 6 pins are difficult to line up, 2 way tape is your friend. Should have practiced doing palm swells on something else first . Went to deep on the first one so had to make the rest suit but all turned out well ...

Finally in a position to buy a new bow but I could have to wait up to 10 months. Can't wait that long. I'm after a one piece or takedown recurve 62 inch around 60 pounds or a 3 piece takedown longbow. I have about $1000 to spend.

This blade has sat unfinished for the last 12 months but I had a couple of rain days home from work so I decided to make the handle and sheath. It is made from an old leaf spring. I heat treated it as though it was 5160 and maybe it was . The 58-60 rc file tells me it's nice and hard and so does the...

Far from perfect but I like it. It does have a good heat treat though.
