Re: Bow no2 a success

Hey Rob, looking bow-like, keep at it. It's always hard to tell without a ground reference, but if your tillering tree is perpendicular to the ground, my gut tells me your tips are even, but the left limb has a bit of a hinge around 2/5ths the way along it, then is very stiff. The right limb appears...

Re: Boo Back Red Iron Bark Bow (2nd Attempt)

Man, I just love the deep red of the ironbark. Moreover, I'm impressed by the amount of problemsolving and troubleshooting you went through to get a result, and what an awesome one at that! Top stuff...

Re: Native Belly wood species

Perry Gidgee is amazing wood eh? My parents' house has an open fireplace in the loungeroom, great for winter. I remember when I was a kid my dad bought a load of gidgee firewood, telling me just how amazing it was. I'd wake up the next morning to see embers still glowing with a pinky-orange hue that...

Re: Ideal properties for bows & Australian woods

Ah sorry, didn't really give any context to the graph. It's a diagram of strain or the yield point of a material. Force is, I believe on the vertical axis, while strain (distance of bend) is on the horizontal. From point 1 to point 2, elastic deformation happens linearly (i.e.: in a contant ratio, f...

Re: Ideal properties for bows & Australian woods

Hey Yeoman, thanks for the comments. I'd love to hear your theories, I think the more we throw these around the better. Your point about MOR and including a safety factor to avoid crysals & set is a good one; in the original thread I linked from paleo planet the poster included a fudge factor of...

Re: Native Belly wood species

Check this thread out, kind of continues on from Dennis's list: http://www.ozbow.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=13050 The calculations that went into that were based on the assumption a single material was being used, favouring a wood that balances tensile and crushing strengths; I guess with a...

Re: Hybrid recurve or long bow?

Man that is just pretty... I'm all about the self bows, but jeez, when you sandwich a couple of stunning timbers together it's just a piece of art. Is it backed with fiberglass, or is that timber?

Re: Ideal properties for bows & Australian woods

My point is that some woods can make elb's safely, as well as wider flatter, less stressed designs. Other woods will make excellent bows only if the limbs are wider and flatter. Woods like the big 3 fall into the first category. I think if you want to talk about ideal properties for bows, an ideal ...

Re: Very slow build of first self bow

Very ambitious first attempt, glad you had fun and learned a lot! I did a similar thing with my first, made it way too light, had a little crack (though its survived countless shots). I've left it unfinished, unrepaired, unbacked, as a reminder of all the lessons it taught me. The first is all for l...

Re: Ideal properties for bows & Australian woods

Cheers for the words of welcome guys, good to be here. Hamish: I take your point about the best of Australian woods. Most of the stuff you can get in boards is a few restricted species, often sawed to make pretty floorboards or as simply as possible. I've got some other resources I think can help us...

Re: List of Bow woods - credit to tim Baker

Man that's straight outta TBB... I remember looking at that list and just head in hands sighing. Number 1 for the lack of direction, and in the same vein, the treatment of eucalyptus as one whole kind of wood... He's a great guy and I love his work, but I swear one day I'll send him a block of an ir...

Re: Silky oak ?

Hmm... you know even if it is grevillia robusta, the stats are very light but the ratios aren't horrible. Here's the stats on one of the wood databases: http://www.woodworkerssource.com/show_numerical.php?wood=Grevillea%20robusta You would have to make it very wide, but the strength to weight proper...

Re: Silky oak ?

Bah, it's Dennis's list really, he went to the effort of writing it all out. I've just done some calculations with it and it's all theory. That said, it would depend on the species. Regular silky oak, grevillia robusta, is probably not great from my experience with it, but I'll check on some wood da...

Re: Ideal properties for bows & Australian woods

Hey Bob, thanks for the welcome and comments! I am of an academic background, but not engineering. I'm a psychologist actually, so maths and statistics aren't so scary to me, but certianly I'd doff my cap to a real engineer any day. I just like research, knowledge and knowing how stuff works more th...

Ideal properties for bows & Australian woods

Hi all, I’ve been lurking here for a couple weeks now (well, on and off for years to be honest), read your posts, looked at your awesome bows and useful advice with much enjoyment. I started making bows a couple of years ago, but gave it up when I had success and winter came; just lost the drive. I’...
