Re: Scouting trip for bear
Went out again last Sunday afternoon. Rough country but it has it's own beauty. Found some acorns but no other sign. http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o241/galnmax/Bear%20huntin/pic6.jpg http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o241/galnmax/Bear%20huntin/pic4.jpg http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o241/g...

Re: My new bow for this year ( added chrono numbers)
I wanted to see what a lower brace height would do so I made a new string and got the brace height down to 6 1/2" from 7 1/4". I shot the same arrows and a 688 grain arrow. Got some interesting results. But I did find out I'm drawing 28 1/2" not 28" anyway here's the original num...

Re: My new bow for this year
Thanks to a friend I got to shoot this through a chronograph. The bow ends up at 55# at 28" with a 7 1/4" brace height. 588 gr arrow-10.7 gr/lb = 174 fps 512 gr arrow-9.3 gr/lb = 184 fps 430 gr arrow-7.8 gr/lb = 202 fps Going to try different brace heights to see how that affects things. I...

Scouting trip for bear
Got out this morning for a trip to the mountains to see if I could find any sign of bear and to do a bit of shooting. Still hot here so kind of tough hiking. Checked out a spring but no sign. Wanted to do some shooting with my new bow but it was awfully rocky. http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o241...

Re: My new bow for this year
Hazard we're not allowed to use scents or bait in New Mexico so I have to hold it in or get a ticket so no toilet paper necessary. rodlong I'm trying a new finish on this one and I like it so far. Just have to see how durable it is. I use what I call t-nuts in the limb butts. Here's a pic. htt...

Re: recurve tip epic fail
Wishing you the best on this but I'd be scared s&*tless shooting that using only 5 min epoxy. The 2 hour stuff would even scare me. There's a tremendous amount of stress at the nocks on a recurve. I'd also beef it up with some bone or even better some phenolic if you can find some. Rough up all ...

My new bow for this year ( added chrono numbers)
I like how it turned out. She ended up 63" nock to nock and 56# at 28". The limbs are 1 1/18" wide at the riser. I used bison rib for the tip and wedge overlays. I made the riser a bit beefy to keep it stiff. I layed up 10 layers of fiberglass cloth and a piece of linen phenolic in th...

Re: Stumping in the San Pedros
Jeff I'm doing quite well thank you. The cancer had grown 15% on the scan 2 months ago but stopped growing according to last Wednesdays scan.
These are pine stumps and most are pretty soft so not much trouble getting the arrows out.

Stumping in the San Pedros
Drove up to the San Pedro Parks wilderness area today to have a picnic with my wife and to do a bit of stump shooting. http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o241/galnmax/San%20Pedro%20Stumping/6-24stump1.jpg It was still somewhat green up there but drying out quickly. Won't be long and they'll close th...

Keith I have to use 63 year old legs just keep them slow and steady. Hoping to get out again this weekend. If the wind is right there's bigger one that really looks like it should be good.

One tough hunt but sure was fun
Got out to hunt aoudad this AM & decided to hike up Cerro de Guadalupe to see if I could spot one that I could stalk up on. I started at 6200 feet and worked my way up to sheep country. I found out the sandy clay extends all the way up to the basalt and when you mix in the rocks you have a very ...

Re: Got out sheep hunting today
These things are pretty spooky so it's going to be tough but getting out here is worth it even if I don't. Due to the wind direction I had to come in from the west which meant I had to start a lot lower. This is steep country I went from 5,879 where I parked to 6,382 where I decided to turn around. ...

Got out sheep hunting today
Got out today to hunt barbary sheep (aoudad). After glassing this cone for a while I thought I could see one in the trees so I started hiking up and glassing as I went. Did some New Mexico stump shooting too. http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o241/galnmax/Barbary%20Sheep/NMstump1.jpg The only sheep...

I've got some smoothon that I need to use before it gets old so I plan on making some micarta with a blend of linen and fiberglass cloth for my next riser. Should be tough as nails.

Re: Scouting for Aoudad
Well went out yesterday afternoon to hunt aoudad. The wind picked up to 30 to 40 mph so I glassed the lee side of the cones but only found cattle. Checked out a couple of water holes then sacked out in the back of my honda element. Had the wind rock me to sleep. Woke up and the wind hadn't let up so...

Scouting for Aoudad
Went out scouting for aoudad (Barbary sheep) last weekend. Not many around this part of New Mexico but there are a few so it was worth checking out. These are pictures of old volcanic cones that they hang out on. the first is Cerro Cuate which is around 900 feet to the top. The second is Cerro de Sa...

Re: Resurection bow
The veneer is ash olive burl. Here's a pic of the sheet that I got from the http://www.theveneerstore.com/ The sheet was rough and had to be sanded down then glued to a thin lam of actionboo so the face side could be sanded smooth. These veneers are sheared off a large block of wood so they aren't s...

Resurection bow
Had a request from a friend to build a set of longbow limbs for an old recurve riser he had. It has been a tough challenge to get everything to fit when working with a completed riser. He wanted it to be 60" n2n and 50# at 29" draw. I spent a lot of time working with this limb design using...

Re: Finally back to building bows.
Updated the pictures since I got the finish done. I added a bit of brown and black stain to the alcohol I use to thin the 2-part epoxy for the last 2 coats of epoxy finish than put on 2 coats of satin exterior poly. I like how it turned out. I also stippled the grip to cut slippage without covering ...

Re: Finally back to building bows.
rodlong I used Rit dye mixed with alcohol. I'd hoped to get it more of a black/gray but this is what it looked like after the smooth-on cured. It is under clear glass. Working on this as much as I could helped me keep my sanity. Got the grip stippled and several coats of satin poly on it so I need t...
