Re: Hickory (Wattle?)

Hi Hamish, thanks for your response.
Where do you source the US Hickory from?
Would it be the same/similar to what the English use?

Its good to know about it for backing, this is what id like to try to use it for.

Cheers

Re: Hickory (Wattle?)

Has anyone used Hickory in Bow building?
If so what for (Backing, lams, core, the whole bow)?
What type, and what is the take on it (good, bad ...)?

Thankyou all for the helpful info thus far!

Re: TechniglueCA?

Thanks Jeff :P I just spent $53 on Techniglue. I also suspect you get it from the US which would make it more expensive still.
For lack of an equally descript but more polite way of saying it; whats so good about 'Smooth On'?

TechniglueCA?

If folks can put down any relevant/useful info for Techniglue here for people to find. I have done some reading and found some useful info but not the answer to my primary question. Should I beat the bow? I have a heatbox. I know a warm day is enough to glue up with Techni glue, but would there be b...

Re: Another failure.

Thanks guys.

Im unsure what was the cause, but as I said, I learnt SO much, it was well worth it. :D

I think I may stick to laminations, with and with out glass to see if that helps. :)
Just need to buy another Circular saw, as my ALDI one packed it in after a few months, surprise surprise. :P

Another failure.

Ok so I ran out of Red Iron bark and needed some more timber. So I went with Spotted gum. I also grabbed some ash, whcih seems a little light but the grain is perfect in it. Will see how it goes. So I used spotted gum, the bow WAS 66", backed with boo pole, Red Iron bark handle material. I shoo...

Where to get Glass + size?

Hey guys, after a bit of looking I see no one asking the question direct: Where is the best place to get glass in Australia? (I live in Sydney but I assume online is best?) Also what size do folks recommend? I want to stick to one size thickness of glass to learn as I make bows. I also intend to mak...

Re: Arrow shelf Q?

Thanks Jeff and Dennis. That info is very helpful. However the problem is not her fingers. They were well off the arrow and it was still doing it. Just a bit of wind was the problem. They are some beautiful bows there Jeff! You guys have triggered another question about anchor points. Where should t...

Re: Arrow shelf Q?

Thanks Kevin. That gives me a great idea 'Shoulder height' it is. And I'll make it a nice low poundage, perhaps between 15 & 20? Cheers

Anyone else got an opinion on the rounded out arrow shelf? Perhaps ill stick with square and perpendicular, so I don't stuff it up for some reason.

Arrow shelf Q?

I have made two flat bows, one with great success and now have the bug. :) I'd like to make the next one with an arrow shelf. My wife has a recurve and was quit irritated the other day with the wind blowing her arrow off the shelf. She was thinking about putting on one of those stick on arrow shelve...

Re: Boo Back Red Iron Bark Bow (2nd Attempt)

Well, its all done. YAY! Took it to the range and fired a dozen arrows and all went well. SO HAPPY! So what I did was: Make the fades more subtle. Put screws through the back of the bow into the handle material. Put binding on the ends of the fades and on the handle as you can see. And the crack und...

Re: Boo Back Red Iron Bark Bow (2nd Attempt)

Thanks Dennis! That really helps. Interestingly both your risers are quite thick and therefor, I think, easier to creat long fade outs with. Next time ill just put a longer riser on and slightly modify the planes to start curving out into the handle to allow for a longer fade out. Cheers. I'll see i...

Re: Boo Back Red Iron Bark Bow (2nd Attempt)

Thanks guys!! I'm SO glad my bow is salvageable! Should I do the binding down the fade outs? Perhaps not if there is some flex throught there. I think I will lengthen the fad outs before I bind so the can flex a little more. 22mm Yeoman! That would have given me like 3mm of handle material then. Per...

Re: Boo Back Red Iron Bark Bow (2nd Attempt)

Sorry for the delayed reply guys. I dont get heaps of time for the internet, sorry. Yes it was a flat bow plan Yeoman. And what exactly do you mean by a thick rizer? I tried to follow peoples advice and put a much thinner handle part on this time but perhaps it was still too thick (it was only like ...

Re: Boo Back Red Iron Bark Bow (2nd Attempt)

O and Yes Yeoman, the funny face is because I was pulling it back as hard as I could and trying to hold it there. :P

And it seems to have lost all its reflex and is slightly .. flexed, if thats the right term, but its only a few mm.

Re: Boo Back Red Iron Bark Bow (2nd Attempt)

Thanks guys. After 1 heavy tiller season this morning the bow is done. I can draw it back to my lip. I tried to measure it and got about 49lb @ 27". I wasn't willing to try to put more weight etc as I was scared I might wreck the bow. I'm sure a proposer measuring tool would be better. I ended ...

Re: Boo Back Red Iron Bark Bow (2nd Attempt)

Thanks guys. I hear what your saying about the left hand tip. Thing is its a bit of an optical illusion. As id spin the bow end for end and pull it down again and it once again would look like the left tip is straighter. I think it may have been the angle of the sun. So id tiller a bit more and get ...

Re: Boo Back Red Iron Bark Bow (2nd Attempt)

So I had to buy a Circular saw to make a table saw. Been thinking about doing this for years, but this last month it became a necessity. :) I hand sawed out my first attempt and the red Iron bark took a good hour of my time and arm. Shesh that worked up a sweat. With this table saw of mine it was li...

I'm so excited to have another go! I was a bit disheartened after buying all these materials but if can use the rest of the iron bark that's great. Will buy a bamboo pole and print out the plans and have another go.

The end shoots are from the ends which had the least cut marks so you could see the grain best.
