Re: Tillering new guinea teak flatbow
Your tiller shape with the short string on looks quite good too. Quite round though. Was this bow a pyramid bow, or close to it? It looks as if it is based on the broken bow limb pic. My limb shape was a straight taper from the fade to tip, with the thickness the same all the way to the tip. I just...

Re: Tillering new guinea teak flatbow
Thanks for your comments Dave and Dennis, I'm trying to absorb as much as I can. That's very encouraging to know that the experts are breaking bows as well! I sort of knew that bow breaking was part of bow making, but it's the first one I have broken myself. I had a couple explode next to me when I ...

Re: Tillering new guinea teak flatbow
Well I did some more tillering this afternoon - full of optimism and armed with lot's of helpful advice, but it wasn't to be. I had it down to 27 inches, all looking good........'CRACK'....... It didn't explode straight away and I got one dodgy photo of the crack before it let go (I tried to move th...

Re: Tillering new guinea teak flatbow
Thanks Kelly, that's what i'm planning to do. I've read it will give a more realistic bend particularly on the tips.

Re: Tillering new guinea teak flatbow
Really? bugger - the only reason I did it is because I read it prevents string follow once it is fully tilleredgreybeard wrote:Leaving the bow braced overnight may lead to increased string follow.

Tillering new guinea teak flatbow
Hi all, I've just started tillering my flatbow made from new guinea teak. Just got it to brace height and left it strung overnight last night. It's drawing 20lb at 6 inches of brace height and I'm aiming for 45-50lb @ 32 inches. I'm not sure how much it should start at so I'm open to comments here -...

Re: Dimensions for warbow
Hi Daryl,
I got 4 pieces from milled board from a local wood turner.
3 are 2400 long and 50x50mm
1 is 2050 long and 70x50mm
I imagine it would have been kiln dried.
Thanks for the link, it's a very interesting read.

Re: Dimensions for warbow
Hi Dennis, wow, thanks for the advice - I've got a lot to learn about timber I think. Definitely going in blind.... And nice pun by the way :D That is a VEEERRRYY long bow to draw from Daryl's information above. I found this information on a site called blackgold.com.au P RO P E R T I E S Density 70...

Re: Dimensions for warbow
Cheers Daryl, looks like it might be alright.
Might even lend itself to a deflex/reflex longbow with the steam bending properties.

Dimensions for warbow
Hi all, i'm going to be making a couple of self bows soon with a timber called 'vitex' or 'pacific gum' which is supposed to be quite similar to spotted gum for wood turning purposes. Not sure about its bow making properties yet, i figured the best way to find out would be to make a bow with it. I n...

Re: Anyone given this a blat?
I tried it when we rolled a tyre off it's rim at landcruiser park one day, but could't get it to work. It looked easy when they did it on top gear!
