Re: 3Rivers Archery Commercial - Banned on the Outdoor Chann
I have to agree that glorifying the death of animals does our way of living a disservice. I too come from a family and generation of hunters back in Canada. My family are Metis and many of my uncles ran trap lines and we all hunt and fish. It's a way of life and for us our heritage as it is for many...

Re: Arrow Weight and FOC
I hear exactly what you are saying and I am one of those that have read and get what Dr Ashby is saying. I do however see other point that have been made on arrows. I am currently searching for my next 2 sets of arrows and the one set sounds like what you are after too in a way. First and foremost i...

Re: Looking for mentor in Port Stephens
Hi Longbow I hear what you are saying. Mt. Vic sounds far away. But HVTA is about 45 mins so that's all right. Sundays are a bit hard for me but I would like to get around there and shoot. I suppose I should clarify where I'm at regards shooting and what I've been doing. I usually shoot once a week ...

Looking for mentor in Port Stephens
Hi all I know this might be a long shot but I thought I would put it out there anyway. I was over at Trad Gang and some guys were talking about mentoring and it got me thinking. What if there was someone in my area that was willing to mentor me? To be honest I'm quite serious about getting better wi...

Re: Australian Deer Association
I think that using such a criteria is not the best way of determining an ethical bow set up. I realize that they are likely thinking of a worst case scenario of someone having a bad shot off on a large 300+kg Sambar and having the most likely chance of still getting enough lethal penetration. Howeve...

Re: Info on Bowyers in Australia for high calibre hybrids
Okay well in the meantime Ive decided to buy a Big Jim Buffalo bow that was offered to me. It just seems to really call to me. I know its not a speed king but I could not get the bow out of my head (Ill post pics when I get it) Its a 60" 51# one piece D/R If it flings the weight of arrow I want...

Re: Info on Bowyers in Australia for high calibre hybrids
I hear you Kim and your not wrong. Cari-bow 50#@28 in full hunting trim with finger release 707gr arrow at 163fps ACS 50#@28 in full hunting trim with finger release 636gr arrow at 174 fps The centaur triple carbon XL is slightly faster then the ACS but sort of splitting hairs. There's a few other b...

Info on Bowyers in Australia for high calibre hybrids
Hi, before I drop some coin on a bow from overseas could any one tell me if there are any Bowyers in Australia that build a top notch Hybrid longbow? I'm talking the calibre of Centaur bows, Montana whips, ACS CX, Cari-bow etc? I'm after a very stable DF/RF quiet, dead in the hand longbow/flatbow 50...

Re: Help selecting weight of heads to tune stiff shafts
They seemed okay but I was surprised that they dropped off at only 15m. They would group about 6-8" below the group of 125gr and the 145gr would group virtually right in the pack maybe 1-2" below on average. I think 2016 shafts would tune in better then 1916 but I'm not sure. If 2016 and 1...

Re: Help selecting weight of heads to tune stiff shafts
I think you're confusing the results some. As you go up in point weight the dynamic spine of the arrow weakens, so with 145's you should possibly be seeing slightly stiff and with the 200's weak. Did you try the 225 and 260? Make sure to shoot each arrow multiple times to get consistency. Also, hav...

Re: Help selecting weight of heads to tune stiff shafts
Well here's an update as to what's happening. First the fellow didn't show with his paper tuning gear so I just planed tested. Seems I can get the 145 to group okay but showing a tad stiff and flying crooked. 200Gr points fly straight drop fast and group a bit weak. I did not have any point weight b...

Re: Help selecting weight of heads to tune stiff shafts
Shawnee, Could I be so flippant to suggest that you merely increase the head weight on your arrows with no other changes. I understand the need to only make one change at a time however since I was unhappy with my rest position I realize the need to set my bow up the way I'm going to shoot it strin...

Re: Help selecting weight of heads to tune stiff shafts
Hey Chris I received the points you sent today. They look great. Thanks so much these will be a big help! I'm going to try paper tuning this Sunday, after that I'll cross reference my findings with bareshaft plane testing. Last Sunday I had a crap day shooting. I stripped my rest off and thought I w...

Re: Help selecting weight of heads to tune stiff shafts
Well after doing some more research I'm keen to try a much heavier broadhead. In fact I would like to try to get as much FOC I can and end up with a total arrow weight of over 500gr. Maybe these would be good flyers if I get the point weight high enough but I'm still not sure how much weight increas...

I agree with Bear The land can provide everything you need if you have the knowledge and skill. Since you are asking advise I would say that you are at a level where you would like to put into practice the things you have learned or read about. If you are going to try things from a book you could br...

Re: Help selecting weight of heads to tune stiff shafts
Thanks everyone. I've let the archery shop know what's happening and am waiting for their response. Btw when I wrote 2216 above it was a typo I meant 2016. I edited it but it did not change it in the subsequent quote. So it's not that I'm not listening :) I've since had a chance to bareshaft and it ...

Re: Help selecting weight of heads to tune stiff shafts
Hi Steve I checked the site right after I got my arrows and they were not grouping well. When I put my specs in it shows 2117-2020 as being suitable for excellent durability and penetration. Now since I told the shop I wanted them for hunting he probably worked off the chart. Btw I did bring my bow ...

Re: Help selecting weight of heads to tune stiff shafts
Well I think i will give the shop a call and see if I can get new arrows. I'm not real happy with the fletching job either. I would like to fletch myself but at the moment I'm too time poor. What would you guys suggest in aluminium? ( I do want feather fletched ) but 4" or 3" ?Helical or o...

Help selecting weight of heads to tune stiff shafts
Okay so after shooting a while with my Easton camo hunter ( 2018 XX75 @ 29-1/8" arrows and 125 grain field points that are feather fletched with offset. ) I have as expected found them too stiff. ( I'm shooting a 45# recurve T.D. At 28" 60AMO) Btw they were selected for me by the archery s...

Re: bushcraft / survival schools
Hi Trikegeoff I would advise that if you decide to utilize books and schools take everything with a grain of salt this includes Internet info. Think things through about what is being taught and if it seems logical. There have always been a lot of instructors and authors of survival/bushcraft that a...

Re: A bit scary - if true
A few years ago I was stalking a big bull moose in the Canadian Rockies. The moose at one point circled around and came back across his own tracks. When my buddy and I reached that spot ( we reckon we were about 250 m and closing in) we saw amongst our own prints fresh very large cougar tracks follo...

Re: Instinct arrow tuning conundrum
Thank you everyone. Well I think what Im going to do is a combination of things. I will try paper tuning and also shooting quite close to a blank stop. Ill shoot all 12 and note any bad arrows that are out of sync and put them aside for later. Should I find a couple of real bad arrows (like 10,11,12...

Re: Instinct arrow tuning conundrum
Thank you all very much. I had a feeling these shafts are a bit stiff. The fellow at the archery shop swears they will fly sweet from my bow and he apparently has been shooting recurve bare bow for like 20 years so I'll give these another chance. I think he was trying to give me robust arrows as I w...

Instinct arrow tuning conundrum
Hi all, I have lurked here a while, great site by the way. Now I have only just started shooting my bow again. Last time was when I harvested a little 3 point white tail buck back in Canada, that would have been more than 10 years ago. Back then I shot the arrows that I got with the bow, which my un...
