For the Black Japan, do you need to varnish them after or is it a stain&varnish?

I use a coloured Estapol product from Bunnings.
I'll post a pic when I get back from work.

On the left are the shafts with a clear varnish.
On the right they are stained with Wattyl Stain and Varnish.
