Re: Trad Archery in upcoming movie.

There were 3 things that caught my attention particularly.

The bow toss by the 2nd archer when he missed the gold.
The 3rd archer torquing is arrow off to the side - something I remember doing more than a few times myself.
And the girl, breathing out to a state of relaxation prior to loosing.

Some excellent shots in this trailer:

Ok. It's animated. But awesome nonetheless.

Re: Bow Making Supplies

I made myself a bow using an Ausbow kit. From personal experience I can recommend it as a starter.

My buildalong can be found:

I still shoot it today.

Rule of thumb.

If the email asks you to send a copy to everyone you know - it's a hoax.

Re: Son asked me for a bow...

Another option - if you want something quick or simple is a Rattan bow. Very quick to make but quite low poundage. I used the guidelines from here: http://bowyersedge.com/kidsbows.html Sourced a few cane staves from a cane furniture place in Brisbane (about $15 each). Cut the stave in half, then tap...

Heya. I've been looking into doing the same thing for a while now. In fact, that was one of the justifications I used in my head to buy the lathe in the first place :) Plenty of guides available online. Or similar.

When used properly they perform somewhere between sandpaper and a fine woodplane.

Replacing nock tips

Heyas. I was given an "Indian" fibreglass bow today - almost certainly this one or very similar. http://www.sportime.com.au/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=638 However it only has one string nock and even that one looks like it's on its way out. I know this is hardly the i...

Re: What poundage for a starter?

Yeah. I'd have said 40# to 45# too. Lower range for trad or recurve, higher for compound. HOWEVER. The poundage you can pull as a raw starter and the poundage you can pull a few weeks later are very different things. You will tone up rapidly and the weight that was only just able to be pulled will p...

Techniglue is classed as a corrosive so extra precautions are needed (ie - cost) when sending it by post.

Buy it locally or find someone that will send it by normal parcel post.

Re: First LamBow buildalong. Very long. Lots of photos.

Over the next few days I gradually sanded it down smoother and smoother - with increasingly fine grades of sandpaper. I sprayed it with a polyurethane based clear coat and buffed it down between coats with 0000 steel wool - that was a learning experience too. Never sealed anything like this before a...

Re: First LamBow buildalong. Very long. Lots of photos.

I shaped the riser as I planned. Marked out the arrow shelf starting at 2" above center. I marked a line from the edge of the limb - 3" up from the top of the shelf down to 3/8" in at the shelf. Made a series of cuts most of the way down to the line with a hacksaw and chiselled the wo...

Re: First LamBow buildalong. Very long. Lots of photos.

The next stage coming up was shaping the riser. This is a critical step and another of the "No going back" stages. Once I remove some of the riser wood there's no putting it back. so I traced out the shape of the riser section onto some framing pine and made a few practice risers. I'm seri...

Now. Nock tip overlays. My materials included a piece of phenolic - resin impregnated cloth. However I was rather impressed with the look I saw in another build-along where the bowmaker used some extra backing glass with a layer of wood on top. With that in mind I took stock of what materials I had ...

That done I stripped off the masking tape protecting the glass (was getting a bit tatty by that stage), added new masking tape and marked out the centre line and shape. http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd237/ppofandt/archery/1stlambow/IMG_1822.jpg Rather than subject my rather underpowered bandsaw...

Glueup time. I was more than a little nervous here as this was a one way process. Excited but nervous. No going back once started. Exceited but nervous. I mixed up the 2 parts of the Epoxy (Techniglue) - probably making too much but for a first time run I preferred too much to too little. I covered ...

Heya. I thought I'd share a Laminated Flatbow build I recently completed. I'm a little self-conscious about posting this as it isn't anything particularly special. It's a run-of-the-mill, bog standard laminated flatbow. HOWEVER, it's the first serious bow that I've made and I'm hoping to encourage a...

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I think I'll spend a bit of time this w/e looking to see what materials are available and possibly making a trial piece.

Probably will be a bamboo pyramid bow. I'll do a trial to see just how fiddly it is and what sort of weight it comes out as.

Thanks again.
