Re: First Bow
All bows have to be tillered according to where the bow is held and hand placement on the string. If you don't tiller a bow with these facts in mind you are just having a bet each way, it's just a guess at best. The reason Dean makes a bow with a shorter lower limb with positive tiller is because th...

Re: First Bow
There is definately a benifit to backing a bow. It is esay to test the benifits. Just make a selfbow and a backed bow out of the same stock material and see what results you get for yourself. If you don't use bamboo and just use a suitable piece of timber you can taper the backing down by hand durin...

Re: Radiused shelves vs Square Shelves
When using overseas timbers such as POC and spruce you will always get the rifts of the grain pointing down one way on the top and the other on the bottom. So there is a correct way to make an arrow for a right or left handed shooter. The grain that you can see in these timbers is called true grain....

Re: Radiused shelves vs Square Shelves
If your arrows are tuned to your bow it shouldn't make any differance if you shoot cock feather in or out. Kev Whiting showed me that in the mid 70's and he was spot on, haven't bothered with it for years when out hunting and need a quick shot. If I am shooting and field course with wooden shafts an...

Re: BroadHead Choices
Just out of interest, is the difference in penetration when using three blades as opposed to two blades less of a problem when shot out of a compound? NO. Bill Baker had a box full of failed broadheads that failed on game up on the Basalt and a lot of them were three blade broadheads, some of them ...

Re: Thank you set of shafts.
Wayno, having the extra feather can be an advantage especially when shooting at close range on pigs as the extra feather will help straighten the arrow up and assist with extra penetration on game. I found the 4X5 inch feathers to work very well on game. A lot of people get too caught up about cock ...

Re: New Bow finished pic heavy..
I have always found the same as well. I have a mild D/R longbow-flatbow design I make and there is a nocitable differance in string tension with same poundage bows when compared to my more highly D/R limb design model. The mild design will not shoot the heavier grains per pound arrows as well either...

Re: Big Game Hunting Poundages ???
As stated, my limited experience with these animals have proved to me that there appears to be no point in using extremely heavy arrows but a good compromise between bow weight and arrow weight. That's right Howie, there has to be a point when an arrow becomes too heavy for the poundage of the bow ...

Re: What did you think of Steve Irwin
I think he was a good bloke. I took my children to the Zoo on a very rainy day many years ago and we were about the only people there that day. Re: Fastflight on Perks longbow
Yes Grahame the stretching of the flemish twist strings is a drawback with them. When I make a flemish string I always over twist them and then I place one loop on a bolt I have cemented is my shed floor and then I place an iron bar through the other end and lay into it with all of my weight. This r...

Re: Fastflight on Perks longbow
I think the whole think about FF compatible bows is a selling ploy myself. I think the question should be, is the string made so that it wont damage the bow. Me personally I do not like and have never liked endless srtings as they always seem to be very hard and abrasive in the string loops and I wo...

Re: Fastflight on Perks longbow
I use dacron to pad the loops because I find that the loops will stay a fair bit softer and thicker than the modern thinner no stretch string materials. When I padded the loops with fast flight the loops seemed to pack in hard and because I wanted to shoot the non stretch material on selfbows I star...
