Re: How to shoot under pressure
Ah Grahame. All of those loutish plebs! I wonder how you cope. But you did extremely well and treated their catcalls with the contempt that they so thoroughly deserved. FOr all others - Grahame won quite a few of the comps, even under this extreme pressure. You can see fromo his facial expression ho...

Hi Moreton et al Sorry to have been a stranger but the last several weeks have been very busy. We're are having our kitchen renovated and there is a lot of work associated with that and it has been occupying virtually all of my time. I'll try a bit harder to keep in touch. Except for a damaged left ...

Re: How Do You PrePlan a Bow for a Particular Performance???
Hi Gilnockie Thanks for going to all that trouble. Regrettably, in my case, I guess I am in the process of building a benchmark bow, so for me it is going to be a case of best guesstimate. I will keep the formula for any future efforts following this first one, providing they haven't dragged me off ...

Re: How Do You PrePlan a Bow for a Particular Performance???
Hi John It's actually a little more popular than it appears, particularly in Vic. ANyway, I've put in my order for the bits and pieces I need and I should be able to start on my first effort in the not too distant future. I'll report on what I do in case anyone else is interested in this field. Rega...

Hi Steven
Hey, not a problem. My last posting wasn't terse at all, just for information.
I'd appreciate anything you have on flight bows. My e mail is : twoodle1@bigpond.net.au

Re: How Do You PrePlan a Bow for a Particular Performance???
Hi Graeme/Steven I actually am very much aware of the type of thing I'm getting into here but I can assure you that I won't be making 20 limbs or anything like that. I don't have the luxury of that sort of time. Fortunately I've had some good advice in regard to design of the bow and I'm pleased to ...

Real carefully, I can assure you. I'm not into creating more work for myself than I absolutely have to.will depend on your design and how you intend in removing draw weight

Re: How Do You PrePlan a Bow for a Particular Performance???
Hi Chris Thanks mate. I've already read Barry Groves' stuff and it doesn't really answer my needs. It doesn't matter. I know pretty much the design of the bow I intend building and I'll probably deliberately make it somewhat heavier than needed and trim it down as needed. ANyway it keeps me off the ...

Hi OL
Got the info, thanks mate.
I like the idea of chopping a bit off the end if it's a bit under. Suits my scientic approach to things
There is no doubt that this will be an ,,,,,,,,,interesting experience.

Re: How Do You PrePlan a Bow for a Particular Performance???
Jeff/Steve You guys are a lot of fun. :( :) I'd love to copy someone else's designs except that there aren't any that I can discover. From conversations I've had with others who are/were in the game, there aren't a lot of these bows around in the world . Sigh! Never mind - I'll just hope that the wh...

Re: How Do You PrePlan a Bow for a Particular Performance???
Hi Graeme I had a feeling someone might say this but was hoping they wouldn't. :( Ah well, it's looks like I have to make 2 sets of limbs at least to get to where I want to go. I'll keep my fingers crossed that I can get by with just 2 sets. Dunno what I'd do with all the spares otherwise  Tha...

How Do You PrePlan a Bow for a Particular Performance???
Hi All I'm about to embark on another bow building project and need some guidance if you would be so kind. This time I'm going to be making a Flight Bow in the 18kg (Approx 40lbs) Class. I plan on making it from a bamboo laminate core with carbon laminates on back and belly, carbon wedges (fades), a...

Re: First Laminated Longbow
Beautiful job David. Congratulations. I don't like actionwood per se but it is extremely strong and very stable so given that and all aesthetics aside, it is probably the most sensible stuff to make a really strong bow out of. And it sort of grows on you after a while....... Best regards Tom

Great looking bow, mate. Excellent job on joining the laminations. Far better than the job I did on mine
Well done - and I like the white glass. Very practical for our hot weather.

Re: Longbow Flight
Just thought I'd show you all the latest incarnation of my clinometer for flight shooting purposes. It's a little larger but more compact and self contained. The large metal drum has 4 lead wheel weights in its lower rim and because the drum rotates on a ball race bearing, it swivels easily. Once yo...

That's great Grahame. Awkward looking grip but I'll give it a go with my Assyrian. :D For Longbow Steve and others - Would you be allowed to use a clinometer on a longbow for flight purposes??? I'm modifying mine to make it a more compact and elegant package (I hope) and will post a pic of the finis...

Oh and it doesn't adversely affect the bows balance or feel. It isn't all that heavy really - less than 1lb I think, although I haven't weighed it

Re: Longbow Flight
Hi Steve My own idea. I don't know if anyone uses clinometers in this game but they do use spirit levels of various types which I looked at and wasn't greatly impressed with. I wanted something that would give me an accurate elevation in degrees so that I could alter launch angles by small increment...

Hi All I don't know if this is of interest to anyone but I thought I'd post it up anyway in case anyone is curious about one way of getting an accurate elevation for flight comps. I made this myself and it is a tad crude but it functions well. It has been calibrated and is quite accurate. It gives a...

Re: Longbow Flight
Great photos as always Grahame. :D Bloody wind!!! So much for theory. The arrows I made up for Grahame were apparently far too light (but the FOC was good). I think there is a great deal to be learnt in flight archery. That which seems to be intuitively right often turns out to be wrong. For ...

Glad you're here. That is some bow weight . I wouldn't be able to draw it 1 inch!
Your arrows on the other hand are uber cool! Truly outstanding!. Wraps I presume? If so who does them as I would love to have some myself?
Best regards

Re: Longbow Flight
Jape know some of us, well me, have at times had the suggestion levelled at us by the 'get a life' brigade that actually going out and hunting or competing is what qualifies us to talk In my experience, when people say "get a life" what they really mean is "why don't you be like me an...

Re: Longbow Flight
I understand that arrows with a sufficiently high FOC will fly quite well unfletched. A FITA archer in Victoria last year shot 346/360 at 70m using bare shafts. However for flight the penalty that comes with high FOC ie greater point weight, negates not having fletches and so it has been found that ...

Drag depends on the area of the fletch. The formula for drag is: D= Cd x 1/2 rho x v squared x S Where Cd is the coefficient of drag for the particular shape in question, rho is the density altitude of the air at the time of testing, v is the velocity of the object in question and S is the surface a...

I'm hoping to make better than 500m with my compound (set at 60lbs). I'm using very light target arrows and very tiny fletches made of little triangles of floppy disc material. Of course, since I've never shot these arrows for distance before, I really have no idea of how far they'll travel. If they...

Re: USA Archery - National Traditional Championships Equipment
Jape I try very hard to emulate John Churchill, The 1st Duke of Marlborough of whom it was said that the key to his greatness was his ability to "tolerate fools gladly". I fail in this continually. That said, even the Duke had his moments, viz: As a strategist he preferred battle over slow...
